Hi everyone, I have an Evo 2 which had its transmission go out. If anyone knows about any compatibility with other car transmissions and can enlighten me that would be amazing as I have no clue and this has become a nightmare.

I am sure people can help, but you will have to do the heavy lifting. Have you done any searching?

I can help a tiny bit, only in that I can say my transmission in my 2g AWD is built from an EVO 2 transmission. The EVO 2 case bolts up on a 2g. I suspect that means a 2g will bolt to your GVR-4, but DONT quote me. That research is yours to do.

The ring gear on the front differential will need to be swapped out if you use a 2g dsm awd transmission (maybe easier to find, but still going to be challenge).

Hope that's a start. Best of luck!

What broke in the transmission? Evo transmissions are worth a fortune now for what they are, so it's easier and cheaper to fix broken things than it is to replace it. You're looking at $1,000 US+ for a core transmission, and lord knows what needs to be fixed with it.

I would agree if the parts weren't so difficult to get your hands on.

Fair question though, how bad off is your transmission?

I bet it's just synchros and bearings, stuff that is still readily available. A solution can maybe be found for a hub/slider if necessary. Unless the input shaft, or transmission gears 1, 2 or 5 are beyond repair, this transmission can (and should) be fixed.

Technically it's still a W5M33s trans, so a DSM trans should bolt up, but ratios could be a crap shoot.

    Here's some info on ratios.

    https://www.4gtuner.com/topic/18357-evo-123-gearbox-ratios/

Do you know what you had in your trans? By chance the trans code from the bell housing?
Another option may be using a DSM AWD trans and changing the rear end ratio to match your new setup.

As mentioned above that if it's possible to repair, that's the best way. but if you don't mind using DSM gear ratios, then you can use a 2g AWD transmission but you need to replace the DSM front diff ring gear and its output pinion with your EVO 2's.
Or using a 95-96 2g transmission with replacing your EVO rear diff ring gear/pinion with 2g DSM. You can use the EVO 2 t-case. The EVO 2 t-case has the same gears as 91-96 DSM.

Just as an FYI - I would count the teeth on the transfer case gears before using it. There is a lot of disagreement about which crown wheel the front diff of the Evo 2 used - the only way to know for sure is to count what you have in front of you. Make sure that the transfer case you use matches that crown wheel!

    Also additional info.
EVO 1/2 t-case has the same gears as 91-96 DSM (1.09)
EVO 3 t-case has the same gears as 97-99 DSM (1.074)

There have been a few instances where people started mixing transfer cases based on this information and ended up breaking things because the counts didn't match. There may be some definitive answer to this, but counting teeth is the only way to know for sure what you have.

I am not saying anything negative about what you said. Of course to count is the way to check if the part number is not visible on the parts. I just share the info that is taken from Mitsubishi.

The transmission I got currently is completely seized. I know about evo 1-3 transmissions and corresponding transfer cases with transfer cases off the DSM's but like one of you said its a crapshoot with the ratios. The transmission seems to be about 750 euros but shipping overseas is more than the transmission

If you replace your transmission, I would be interested in the front ring and pinion out of your current one.

Right, the shipping cost is the issue. I can still find complete EVO transmissions in Japan but the shipping cost for a complete trans from Japan to North america would be over $1000. Even last time when I brought the complete internal parts of EVO except the front diff, the shipping from Japan was $400~500. And now it's more difficult to find only internal parts.

If I go to the deep, cold south again next winter, I plan to go to Japan afterwards since all this virus stuff cancelled my trip there this year. Might have to try and locate some goodies to bring back.
Maybe I could make freinds with someone who could get me a shipping deal.

Have it looked at by a competent local transmission shop - or even better - TMZ or TRE. Seized doesn't mean unfixable.

If someone wants to buy it in the link, it's time when you find. Now there are some south asian groups that are buying those kind of JDM parts using their people in Japan, they don't care much about the price and re-selling in their facebook pages. Many used parts shops like in the link used to price down each listing (each listing is 5-6 days) if nobody buys, until 100JPY to 1000JPY which is $1USD to $10USD but since those groups have made a mess, now we can't hope too much to get cheaper even you wait. So if the recent price is not that expensive, it's time to buy when you find.

    @bastarddsm are you looking for EVO 1/2 64T or EVO 3 63T?

It's not hard at all to buy stuff from Japan. I don't recall ever seeing a loose Evo pinion for sale, though.

True. On Yahoo auction or some big sites, no it's not hard to buy at all. Even there are services to buy internationally. So that's easy for everyone.
But the common issue for most of international buyers is still many small Japanese shops only accept domestic bank transfer, which means you must have a Japanese bank account or have someone in Japan to make the payment. Paypal is not common over there and even they accept credit/debit cards, sometimes they don't accept international one.
In case if someone has a hard time to buy something from Japan, I can help. Just PM me.
