trying to solve the image size right now. Havent had time to pull the head and take a look. im thinking the piston came up and bent a valve or two into the plug.

I'm assuming it looks like this one? This was from a lifter not bleeding down holding a valve open, took the head right off both valves and lodged the valve head sideways into the combustion area of the head.

i believe the damage is not to that extent, thinking i got the milder version of what happened to you. i skipped my timing and then things went south. wondering if any further damage besides to the piston and head.

Unless you're really really lucky, you have a mangled compression area (pistons and head and possibly walls). The damge is not from a piston, its from a foreign piece (ie valve head) bouncing around in the chamber.

So you can imagine what that's gonna look like ;).

Boy, sometimes you really do appreciate the timing CHAIN on your other vehicles....
What a bummer. Time for a tear down and rebuild.

You can see where the valve head turned sideways and take out the spark plug.

I would bet the threads in the head are now distroyed and you will need a kingsert installed in that cylinder.

Unless the head is a ported "High dollar" head, you will want to find another head casting.

I have 3 dropped valve heads in the shop now to repair.

I wish you the best, and hope you did not suffer and cylinder bore damage.

BTW.... Do you know what valves are in the head?

The head and valves are all stock. So thinking a full head rebuild to free up some more power.

holy crap! Wtf

In the midst of finding a new casting to build up, any ideas guys? Going for bigger cams and new springs/retainers. Not sure what size would be good for streetable cams with a 20g with supporting mods.

Some run the Kelford272 and call them streetable.

So streetable is relitive to what you will put up as far as the manners of your car.

What goals and budget are you setting?

Hoping for 400-450hp to rip past the guys in their little hemi's and stangs. Thinking around 1200ish bucks, depends on if the head is damaged. I'm looking for quick spool as its my daily and no one up here understands what a 'pull' is.

My old setup I had some bc 272/272 and stock springs. This was a good setup even for 18lbs that I daily drove it on. It pulled well and I had no issues, just make sure you keep an eye on a wideband

You can get 400 with the "smaller" 272 cams, FP/Comp, BC, HKS and the clones from Delta of them.

So that means about any of the single springs will work just fine with the stock retainers.
Like the BC1100, Crowers or Manleys.

Stock 6T valves will be fine.

But in your mangled plug casting, figiure about another $100 or so to get it back into shape

Just guessing, but some welding, some grinding, a spark plug King sert, guides, and a good chance at a seat or 2 needing replaced,.

He's saying you can get 400+ HP with any off-the-shelf "smaller" 272 cams. I.e. Brian Crower, Delta, etc.

Kelford cams are the same duration as others (272/280/etc>) but their lift is crazy, making them less "streetable" than the others mentioned, but a lot of people run them anyways and the street manners are acceptable to them.

Many people have gone well over 400+ HP with stock cams, fyi. Bigger cams just make it easier, especially at top end and with a decent turbo.

Well I figure if my car is going to be down for the rest of winter I may as well go for the bigger cams and such to reach my goal with reliability included. So springs and retainers I already have should be good? As long as they haven't rubbed at all.

If you are going with small 272 cams, install a new set of valve springs.

Most all the 4g heads I have pulled apart and tested the valve springs, they have been weak.

Your valve springs are almost 20 years old, and how many miles? and how many times have they been compressed?

A new set of BC1100, Manley or Crower single valve springs are $100 or less and will work with your stock retainers.

**EDIT**

So you know what you will be looking at when the head comes off.

i have unknown miles on the motor as it was replaced and service records were 'lost'. and i may as well need new retainers as well. would it be in my best interest to get new guides for the valves?

I'd get new valve guides, like you said you don't know how many miles are on the engine. Better to play it safe and get new ones, maybe even upgrade them because there a relatively cheap part in the first place.
