I have a ‘97 GSX I’m building currently and I’m hoping to make between 350 and 400hp once I’m done. I’ve heard people say they can make these numbers on stock internals but I’m not sure how reliably I can do so. What are some main weak points in these stock engines? Pistons? Rods?

At those power levels I'd say pistons first. Will depend heavily on the tune and what fuel you run as for reliability. Over the years I've gotten a little frustrated with the word reliable. It typically isn't a question of reliable. Nothing stands up to poorly tuned abused use. Tune it well, maintain it well and these cars generally perform well. We learned how to break parts when the cars were new. We spent the next 30 learning how NOT to break them.
 
Might as well throw a set of rods in it too. Stock crank is fine. Should be a good bottom end unless you push a ton of boost.
Best price I could find was about $370, which is very reasonable or buy the combo Eagle Rod/Wiseco piston which is also reasonable.
