what is the general difficulty of doing a engine swap, compared to changing and swapping heads? whats mainly involved in swapping the engine? just unbolt it from the bell housing and from everything that stays in the car and lift it out and drop in the new engine? bolt it up and connect everything back up? i could swap heads i think but i would then have a list of things to buy and the engine i wanna swap in already has brand new timing belt new water pump, new alternator, so its ready to go, the engine thats in it now snapped a timing belt and the cams wont move much either way. advice and thanks.

i would un hook every thing from the motor and trany. then take out both at the same time. then bolt up the new motor to the trany after checking the condition of your clutch system. that way you can replace what you need to while it is out. then take every thing off your old motor and swap what you need to the new motor. then bolt the motor to the trany. then reinstall the motor and trany in to the car. then hook up all the wires and make sure your timing and every thing is in good order. LOL sorry for going all out

You dont have to take the tranny and engine out at the same time..i find it easier to remove the engine out by its self.
Its really pretty simple, there are 4 bolts connecting the the tranny to motor, remove those the wire harness the fuel line, power steering, vacuum lines ect.And the engine should come right out
Good luck :D

I know this is a bit old, but if your looking for more info on a 1g GS - GST swap ChiTownHussla, the powertrain is rather straight forward swap but a few things that should of note :

GS (Non Turbo) Tranmission is different, and its not built for the extra torque/horsepower from a 4g63T
GS Axles are thinner. Again not meant for much torque
GS Ecu is different.
GS Wiring does not have a knock sensor.

The easiest way to got at this is to find a parts car with ecu + harness + tranny + axles, and of course a 4g63T

Well i got it all swapped by just learning as i go. But after 48 miles my rod bearing started knocking so now i am pulling it again for the rebuild. FUN STUFF. I finally got to boost and now i need to curve the addiction. Ran 25 psi my first run out. Awesome experience.

This is NOT true. The FWD axles vary based on the year and in some cases the transmission, but not turbo to non-turbo. All '90- Late '92 FWD axles are the same size and they have the same spline count as the AWD axles. From Late 1992-1999 the FWD's switched to a larger axle then the AWDs with a different spline count. This is the same for turbo and non-turbo 4G63's.

Also the non-turbo wiring harness is missing more then just the knock sensor wiring. It is also missing the 7th wire for the MAS, the wiring for the wastegate solenoid, and the wiring for the injector resister pack.

If interested in a non-turbo to turbo swap, check out this tech article, it is pretty complete: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-turbo-system-intercooler/48231-installing-turbo-4g63-into-nt-4g63.html

You need to make sure you change all the wiring up.. As far as I am aware everything in the dash is the same besides the connections from the engine harness (as the whole harness would need to be changed) plus the lighting harness.. Don't be scared of swapping the harnesses though as they are a lot easier than they seem.. You do need more than one harness though (i.e. the engine harness and the lighting harness) also, didn't know if the GS came with ABS but if they do either delete it or get a harness with ABS as that is integral too.. I found that one out the hard way. Cheers
