alright guys, i'm posting this for my buddy. he's got a 96 Eclipse AWD, with a 6 bolt swap. The car ran when they did the swap, but the shop who put the engine together put a 2g head on the 1g block. the car ran, but had issues because of that. he then swapped the 2g head off and put a 1g head on. now the car doesn't start at all. timing's been checked about 4 times, there seems to be spark and fuel. check the cas I don't know how many times...and all the wires seem to be plugged in...any other suggestions as to why the engine doesn't start when it did before he changed heads?

and the car does crank over with out any issues, it just doesn't start...no signs of firing...just turns over and over and over and over. any help would be amazing...thanks guys and gals!

Do a compression test. You have fuel, you have spark, no you need to be sure you have air and compression.

You said there seems to be fuel and spark, how did you test this? I would also check the compression test maybe the HG didn't seal right or could the 1G head not be in the greatest condition? Was that CAS installed correctly?

well I wasn't there when they actually tested the plugs and wires the other day, but they said they had spark and fuel. I did pull the plugs out and they all had fuel on them. I don't have a compression tester, but I do have a friend who's going to loan one to me next time I see him(he lives about 35 miles from me). if the hg had a leak, wouldn't the car still sound like it was trying to fire?? all it's doing is just turning over.

oh and we double checked the cas the other night, it seems to be in there properly.

my car did that last night after i changed my head gasket set. all i did to get it started was release the air pressure build up in the fuel rail by pushing the needle down on the pressure valve.

well I pulled the injectors and fuel rail off the other night, because I noticed one of the injectors didn't look like it was seated right...put it all back in, and no change...I'll try that though...who knows.

if there is air in the system you wouldnt be getting fuel.

If the plugs are wet you probably dont spark or maybe not enough spark to fire the fuel. Check for spark. Make sure the resistance in the wires is within spec, you might of broken them by pulling them back and forth while doing the swap. Get another CAS to double check. Pull the CAS out with key engine run position, mark where you had the CAS when you removed it, then turn the CAS by hand, you should hear the injectors fire and the spark plugs ticking, if you dont hear that, you probably have a bad CAS or a bad connection from CAS to Coil/Fuel system

just remember how the CAS went back into place so you dont put it back in at 180 deg off.

hes tried two different cas in it, but I'll try that...do we have to have the engine turning over when we do that? I don't think the plugs and injectors would be pulsing with just the key turned to run. or do you mean that the plugs and injectors will engage because of the cas being turned by hand?

the injectors and plugs will fire because you are telling the ecu that the engine is spinning by manually turning the CAS.

Check to see if the coolant temperature sensor is plugged in, I know that will cause the car not to start because of an overly rich mixture. Turn over the engine a couple times then try unplugging all the injectors and see if it runs; could be getting too much fuel.

If The injectors were not seated right you would have had fuel everywhere and if you didn't grease the O-rings on the injectors after you put them back in be ready for lots of fuel spray.

EDIT: if the injector was indeed not seated right then when you tried to start it all them times before you pulled the rail you would have had lots of fuel everywhere and if you didn't then you were not ever getting fuel.

This may not be your answer but when I did my engine swap I couldn't figure out for the life of me why it would not stat but it would turn over like a champ. All I did was unplug the batt for about a min and then plugged it in and it started, then fixed the timing and it ran great.

thanks guys....next time I'm over I'll try some of that. and ya, the cams looked to be on the proper sides. I'll double check the coolant temp sensor, and I'll try the battery disconnect...fuel was spraying everywhere, thats why I pulled the injectors out and fixed the seals.
