Engine Noise / Ticking, Knocking, Tapping MERGED

All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.


I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

..I'm going to go with ISC. If the battery's been pulled or for any reason the ECU forgets where the ISC is it'll reset the ISC.

If it is a wistling sort of noise it could come from a vaccum source(any place with vaccum), a slight leak could cause a noise.

If this clicking noise happens when ou turn the key, it could be starter (relay). This noise would be synchronized with the turning of the ignition.

I don't think the IAC would cause the car not to start though.

I have a similar problem. With the key on their is a clicking sound and it take a few true to get started. You can hear the starter sliming but it seems like its not engaging right away.

You can totally hear the noise - made a little video. I don't think I mentioned but it seems to NOT happen when it's cold - first couple of minutes or so. Once it's warm, it won't shut up!! Let me know what you guys think - thanks!

Are you running a stock BOV?
Try having someone put there have infornt of the outlet, the noise might go away.
Let me know if you get a chance to try it.

haha that definately sounds like your bov. idk it hard to tell through only a video. get under the hood an rev the car with the camera under the hood. we could hear the noise alot better this way.

im pretty sure its not the bov but, im wrong quite a bit. i'm running a crushed 1g recirculated & have checked & double checked seal(s). i will take another look for sure & try to get better video coming...thanks.

if it clicks and dash lights up when you turn the key to start its more than likely the starter.

I'm going to have to say B.O.V. I had a 1g bov in one of my 2gs and did the same thing.

Yea its the bov I had a 1g on mine and did the same thing as yours is doing

Not to sound like a broken record but yes, that for sure is a 1g bov. Mine will actually whistle like that for 3 blocks if i hold the pedal just right.. drives me nuts!

It's from mileage, really. The stem seal wears out and leaks, causing the whistle.

I don't understand what you guys are trying to say. Hehehe. I'll dump the BOV but don't have anything but a POS Greddy ebay knock off.

That thing is total crap & isn't set up to be recirculating. What should I go with - any suggestions? GOT to have the noise go away - driving me nuts but its tough to drive when it won't idle. What to get (w/out lots of cash)? Thanks again.

I switched back to the pos ebay greddy knock-off & noise is gone-FINALLY! Thanks so much..

What should I get? Just did rebuild, planning on big 16g but have a 14b that i'm planning on installing till I have ends for the other. The ebay knockoff I'm using isn't set up to recirculate & I'd like to go back to that. Any suggestions on what to get?

I got the starter checked out at autozone and it passed. but they only test to see if it engages. Could it be that the starter is not strong enough while its under a load?

Well my engine starting making a ticking noise so I thought it was my lifters( I have a 2g eclipse) so I bought the 3g lifters. Had them changed (would have done it myself but i am on dialysis) when I picked the car up after the work was done I took off and the noise is still there. I only hear the noise when the car reaches up to 2000rpms. Any other ideas on what it could be. Thanks

Could be the timing belt tensioner. They will make that type of noise too.

The noise that I am hearing sounds like a rapping noise. It sounded to me like the lifters but after having them changed and still hearing the noise it can not be. And like I said before I am only hearing the noise when it gets above 2000rpm's

is it injector tick??
If you cant find it out, i would check the injectors for the ticking noise!
