All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Ok so I got this car a little while ago and decided to get all major maintenance done by a shop to make it a reliable daly driver. Its a 98 gs spyder with 110k on it. I took it to my shop and got the timing belt, balance shaft, pulleys, water pump the whole 9 yards. However, when I got the car back it was making this sound.......

the mechanic said he heard it before he started but I know it wasn't making that noise because I would have never bought it, anyone had a similar situation that can related or any 2 cents of what the problem may be? Im thinking they're is a leak somewhere, but I dont know. HELP

hmmm thats a good idea, but it goes away when I accelerate past 2k, isnt there as much when idling its around 50-1500 its the loudest. I will still check that out though, thank you for the input

Yes does semm to sound like the timing belt is rubbing the timing cover. If that isnt it you can look to see if it might be something else rubbing somewhere.

ill check that out, I didnt do it the shop did, and they said they got the component kit with all the pulleys and stuff.

sounds like the belt is either loose or to tight. but id def start with checking for clearance issues first and work your way in.

First, the noise that won't go away - the best way for me to describe it is that it sounds like a rusty gate swinging - always a 2 tone whistle from a high pitched then changes to a higher pitch whistle. Only happens on decel & partial throttle - never on acceleration.

Literally just finished a rebuild - 95 tsi - new rings (nothing fancy, just oem). The noise was there prior to my rebuild, and is there now as well. Car's pretty much stock - 1g bov (recir), injen intake, just installed 3in downpipe & Apexi N1 cat-back. Seems to be running well but that noise is really getting to me.

I thought during the rebuild I'd find/track down/fix whatever might be making the noise cause everything came apart. I was wrong.

If anyone has had similar situation, please let me know - thanks.

No - already been through the wheel bearing bit. Replaced both rears & 1 front, so I'm pretty familiar with symptoms. Replaced throw out bearing, pivit ball & shift fork when I did my clutch about 10 months ago. I'll work on getting video of it - hell, I own the car & I can't figure it out! It's gonna be tough to diagnose unless someone has had the same exact problem with there car.

It seems to be tied into intake or fuel maybe?? It only happens on no throttle/partial throttle. It will stop once I'm back on the gas. I replaced both throttle body gaskets yesterday & that had no effect at all. It sounds like a hindge that needs to be lubed really bad - don't know how else to describe it but I'll try to get some video up tomorrow if I can - thanks.

Could be the throttle body shaft seals. My old stock throttle body made a whine whistle deal when on part throttle or just letting off. I just put in a 1g n/t throttle body and the noise is gone. Maybe try and re adjust your throttle stop it could not be closing all the way. Just loosen the stop abit then pull throttle back and let it slam shut. Then adjust the stop back so the throttle doesn't stick. Just a thought.

Ok so here's the problem car won't start everytime it takes me about 5 or 6 cranks to turn the car on sometimes more. I started to notice that when I turn the key to the on position there's a ticking noise somewhere by the intake. I have no idea what this means or what it might be. Need some help.

Thanks
