All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

honestly i couldn't tell you...checked the oil lvl when i bought it and the oil still looked good so haven't changed it yet. If i have time im changing all the fluids tmrw

They both sound like lifter tick.

As for the blue smoke? You could have a bad turbo, which may be why it "whines".
Lifter tick is no big deal, it's normal :)

White smoke is usually coolant, blue is oil.

White smoke smells sweet too.

That doesn't sound bad enough to be knock, but once again videos are hard to go by.

Oh, and try not to use text words or abbreviations. Just one of our policies.

Good luck!

thanks Lofty...sorry its just habit i text so much! haha but turbo could be...when i'm at WOT i do smell oil when i have the windows down. Could a bad turbo be a symptom of that as well? And how would i check if its the turbo causing the smoke?

alright sorry I didn't get it done this morning. I was exhausted by the time I got off work!! But I did the compression test and it was 135-140-145-145. So thats normal i think. But heres the video of it revving once the engine is warm.

Like i said before, once its warm you can really barely hear it. Any more thoughts?

ok today i got curious and went to check the timing marks to see if they lined up corecttley so i spun the motor with a wrench and pulled the #1 plug, assuming that the # 1 cylinder is on the timing belt side of the motor. i put a metal coat hanger in spark plug hole resting on the piston. and when the cam marks where alligned properley at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock so proceded to to spin the motor and my coat hanger move about half and inch to 3/4 of an inch before it hit top dead. when it was at top dead the cam timing marks were way off. so what would cause the timing belt to slip a couple of teeth to knock the timing out like that. should i buy a new timing belt and tensioner or should i buy new t-belt, water pump,

Wow, thats sucks man. First do not start the car anymore. Second you will need a new timing belt, and id replace the tensioner to just in case. My buddy has a 3000gt vr4. he did the timing belt on it,got a new the idler pulley but the tensioner looked ok so he said screw it. two weeks later the dam tensioner gave out and took the heads with it. cars been sitting for a year now.But id replace both pulleys, the belt and if the pump hasnt been replaced recently replace that to there really cheap like 30 bucks if i remember.
As for causes if the belt was to lose it could have jumped, if the belt had a weakspot but its really hard to get a exact cause sometime they just do it.
Most impotant os do not run the car untill its fixed youll be lucky if you didnt already take out a valve.

The whining noise you hear could be the turbo, which could also be why it smokes. To check the turbo, you need to see if it has any shaft play. Check the up and down play and the in and out then let us know what u come up with.

This right hear is all you need to know. The sound of your vids is how mine used to sound as far as lifters go. Try to use lucas oil staboliser thats what i use with every oil change and it fixes the tick. Still there during cold starts but it goes away pretty quick.

Put up the rev video, and the oil puddle is more then likely your oil cap.

and if its not the cap look for cracks in the valve cover mine has one:p

Sounds like lifter ticking to me. Ending up putting Royal Purple 10w-30 in the GST and the tick has pretty much disappeared. Still there for just a teeny bit when it's cold, but it goes away real quickly. This was also after I replaced the turbo too. Turbo was burning the oil so we'd have to check it every other day. Check your turbo but I'd say you're in for a turbo swap and an oil change. :)

Edit: Also... as far as the oil near your wires... could be the spark plug well gaskets. Little rubber o-ring type gaskets. I'd try doing a valve cover gasket change.... the new VC gasket should come with those seals also. Do that and see what happens.

If it does it more when you turn left and right on your steering wheel then its your power steering. maybe your just low on it.

hahahahahaha, dam that was funny, not that the barings was messed up just people saying power steering, power steering, power steering, then boom you put up a pic of gounded down barings
