All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

It kinda sounds like that just not all the time it only does that when it gets up to and over 2000rpm's. I see that someone posted that it could be a timing belt tensioner, what is that. As you all can see I am not very mechancaly inclined trying to learn it all but not doing very good. I am just confussed by this because everything that I have learned in the past tells me that hte noise is my lifters and even after I have changed them I am still hearing the noise. And like I said I hear it when it gets up to 2000 rpm's. Thanks to evryone that cqan help me.

My 2g did that also, in my case it was a solenoide on the fire wall. If you want you can unplug it and try that, but it may throw a cel. Does it do it just reving or does it have to be driving?

It makes the noise both while driving and when I rev up the engine and both when it gets up to 2000rpm's. And yes I did get my old lifters back been ripped off before and dont plan on getting ripped off again.

What do you mean by solenoid on the firewall and what cell can I throw if I unplug it. JUst asking cause I dont have a clue

Dis you receive your old lifters to make sure they even put in the new ones? Some shops are bogus like that.

^ this.

In an engine, every part wears differently so if when rebuilding your engine, you used old parts such as lifters, they way tick until fully seated. this also goes for when you plan on reusing parts during a head gasket change or something similar. Label every part and location so you put the back were they were originally.

How long does it typicaly take for the lifters to get fully seated. Now I am not sure cause it still made the noise after I picked the car up but we only drove the car and had it running for maybe a half an hour if that. So could the lifters just not be fully seated yet? We did noticed that the stock oil pressure gauge did not go up any and the oil was just changed when the lifters were replaced and the gauge just did not go up to normal.

Sometimes it doesn't take long to seat and other times they never seat right.

This is speaking from my experiences with push rod engines.

So how does one get rid of that ticking noise? Cause it cant be a good sign and something has to be wrong. If not the lifters what else

Ok if I can not figure out what the problem is and where the noise is coming from what would be better. rebuilding or replacing I know replacing would be easier and quicker, but , if I replace what should I replace with the same or something different and if something different what. Also I have heard alot about stroker motors what excatly is a stroker motor and are they really better? Again just trying to figure out what my next move will be but I guess I shouold also wait for the micchanic to tell me what he thinks also considering he is soppose to tell me today.

Thanks for all the help on this still not sure what is wrong hoping to figure it out soon.

First off, please let me say I read, in depth, the other threads on this, and I couldn't find an answer. One thread was close, and everyone seemed to think it was a boost leak, but I have the 420a, so that can't be it.

On to my problem. When I accelerate hard, my car makes this obnoxious buzzing whistling sound that almost overpowers my exhaust (Which is pretty damn loud). I originally thought it was an exhaust leak but it seems to be coming from the front of my car. My AEM air filter is loose, like, the filter isn't secured to the rubber stopper thing (Nice technical lingo, huh?). Could that be the noise? It only happens when I press hard on the gas, so I have to be driving to hear it otherwise the RPM's will go too high. Also, the sound doesn't seem to have to do with the RPM's, just the acceleration. For example, let's say I'm going up a hill in second gear at 2K RPM's, and it will be buzzing like an angry beehive on crack, but I can get my car to redline, and if I don't push hard on the gas, there's no noise, so my best guess is that it has something to do with the throttle. Sadly, I'm still learning and barely know how the throttle works, so trying to find the problem would be like trying to find hay in a needle stack. Has anyone else had this problem? I'll be checking the thread often so if anyone needs clarification I'd be happy to give it. Thank you for any help you can give, and I'm sorry I wrote so much.

If i were you id make sure the intake is secure. From the way your explaining it i can see the leak (if there is one) making noise when the throttle starts opening at low rpms but closing up and or making less noise due to vacuum of the throttle closing up the leak at higher rpms.

A friend of mine drove a 318 bmw with a hole in his filter and it whistled like a supercharger haha.

Sounds like something is either loose like a bolt or the t belt is rubbing. Id take your t belt lower cover off and double check it before something bad happens! Also have you checked the amount of tension in your t-belt?

Could be bad bearings on the idler/tensioner pully replace them and see if it fixes the issue.

Okay guys, i took another video today when i got home from work, listen for around 3 minutes it starts acting up after moving the throttle, then another noise comes into play, around 4:25 my buddy discovers the timing belt is lose. now is this the cause to the other problem too?

i have the whistling buzzing noise coming from under my hood when i accelerate hard. but if i dont push the engine hard or even slightly hard i cant hear it. i feel like its taking away power from the turbo. its very annoying and its definatly coming from the front of the car. around my air intake. it sounds like there is some kind of leak between where my air intake is and where my BOV is because its not allowing the BOV to work right. i dont know whats wrong and its really annoying. please help!!!
