If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.



I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

I have a lifter tick (at start up) during winter as well.. its 0-20 degrees here in pittsburgh..
But summer time comes around, it goes away.. hahah

I can tell you this, if your that annoyed with it;
get ahold of some 3rd gen lifters and put them in..

your lifter tick will go away.
 
That thought also crossed my mind when I saw that movement.
If it would be crank walk. Could he grab and pull/push on the crank pulley to check for movement?

Yeah, if its bad enough to mess with the idle, it probably moved enough to take out the crank sensor.

Lets not scare him too much though, haha.
 
I've had this happen a few times. One time it was a tranny mount bolt that got loose and fell out, another time one of the "ears" on the block that broke off.
 
Its not CW. I had that on my last Dsm, and I yanked and did everything to the harmonic pullyto budge it and nothing. But the missing bolt and bolt stripped by the slave might be problem. Lets hope right.

DSM love hate again

Do you have any check engine lights on? Im trying to eliminate the possibility of crank walk causing the car to die at idle, because like mentioned already, a bad clutch would not have anything to do with that.

no check engine light or anything. I think this car runs AMAZING sounds so good.
 
well iv tried taking a video and it just makes it sound soooo much worse then what it really is, it changes the tone and everything
 
Hello all,

I get a chirping noise which follows the rpms, but only when cold. Could my Stock Turbo be dying?

I did do a Water Pump and Timing/Balancer Belt a little over a year ago, so I don't think it's the WP, but ??

Any suggestions?
 
Belt squeal is an all too common problem with dsm's. Tighten the belt and see if it helps. It may not though. A lot of us use a shorter belt to fix this issue.
 
when i suspect a belt noise take a crayon and use a long pair of plyiers and touch it to the inside of the belt while the engine is running if the noise stops then it is for sure the belt and i will take a rubber hose and place one end to my ear and slowly move the other end around when you get close to the source of the noise it will be noticibly louder through the hose ps it is never ok to spray any kind of oil on the belts i even stay away from belt dressing
 
ok so the other day i was going to change my oil at my buddy's house and his friend was like "fire it up I want to hear" so i started it and it made a very unpleasant "clunk" noise. I was playing with the throttle and at like 1500-2500 rpms it makes a noise like a chain going over a metal table? when i changed the oil i found no metal. i pulled off the valve cover, and everything looks in order and everything is tight. I have been trying to read up on funky noises and the only thing that i can relate to is someone who had a balance shaft seize. any ideas or input is much appreciated. i will be again draining the oil tonight

Need a video as stated. But you could pull the timing cover off and check to see if the belt skipped a tooth and valves are smacking the pistons can happen no metal in the oil. Also could need to change lifters but cant say for sure until we get some visible proof to help narrow your problem down.
 
i will get a video clip asap. no i didn't do anything but start it when this happend, and tomorrow i will probably spend all day on it. i will check the timing also
 
noo. i took a video on my phone but the sound quality sucks. if i can find a nice camera ill get a clip. it only happens at like 1500-2500 rpms, and it almost is like a click that bounces around. I'm sorry but my description probably doesn't help.
 
I went and started up the car when it was cold and I can hear the noise coming directly from the Turbo. Pretty sure I am getting play and this is why it's noisy. I went ahead and bought a rebuild kit for the T25. I never rebuilt one before so I'll let you know how it goes.
 
1995 GSX 5 speed. Car idles fine, turbo spools great, used the right gas but when flooring the gas pedal the engine looses power and a whirling/grinding noise comes from the engine bay. I can rev the car in neutral or with the clutch in and the car is fine. This all happens very briefly only for a second or two and then regains power. It feels as if something is slipping. Plugs are ok I have yet to check injectors.
