All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Hey guys,
Im in need of some help, ive got an issue with my motor and i dont know what it is, and Im tired of spending money on parts that dont need to be replaced. I made a post about it In september, and I got some great ideas. this is a vid of my motor making the noise when i posted back in september.

YouTube - 4g63 engine noise

Ive been working on my car periodically since the post, and since then Ive replaced the timing belt tensioner and pulleys and installed new lifters. i finished putting the lifters in tonight and the motor sounds the same if not worse (i think) What do you guys think?

When i installed the new lifters i followed the process that you can find here
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-engine-fuel/265060-how-replace-lash-adjusters-lifters.html

anybody have any thoughts on what this can be? Im thinking it could be my balance shaft but im not sure and dont want to keep buying parts that i dont need.

Thanks for the help in advance

The compression is at 130 in all 4 cylinders. 130 is low compared to stock, but my motor is bored out .20 over, i was told by boring out the engine it drops your compression, i dont know if thats correct i havnt looked into it. if my memory serves me right i check the compression right after my rebuild and it was at either 130 or 150 in all 4 and i only have 2000kms on the engine now.

thanks for the help

is there shavings in your oil pan?

I found the problem, spun bearing on the oil pump balance shaft. When i pulled the pan the bearing fell out. now its a matter of removing the balance shafts and hoping there isnt any other internal damage done.

I have a strange ticking noise coming out in a middle of the t-belt cover. Ihad this noise ,since i dropped my engine in my gsx. I just fixed my t-belt walking problem.and i thought ,that will solve my problem.but it didn't. The ticking sound is the same in any range of rpm's,The noise doesn't go faster or slower. I reused the tensioner pulley and the tensioner arm. Can a tensioer pulley make a ticking sound. Ithought it a water pump, but i took the belt of,started the car and i still had a ticking noise... The crankshaft pulley is solid as a rock, the rubber around it has no cracks... what else it can be wrong???

yeah GG that is definently a spun bearing. I my first 5 SPD saturn suffered that fate after running a turbo setup for about 3 days.

I was freaking out when it happened to.

i had the same problem with my 6 bolt...so i did a new water pump, timing belt with all tensioners and a new balance shaft belt and the ticking sound went away

Ok, this is very strange, a while back I remember hearing a vibrating noise like a cell phone on vibrate in my engine bay, it happened when car was off after a drive. Today I did a boost leak test and car wouldn't hold above 5psi, found out it was leaking at the canister, check pic, the one with no hose on top:

So then I plugged it and it would hold more boost, then I noticed the vibrating noise from a while back and it is coming from the charcoal canister! No one ever heard of this noise before and now I have located where it was..Anyone have a clue? Much appreciated!

I don't think that nipple on the charcoal canister is the source of your boost leak. That nipple is supposed to be open. I know it's misleading as heck but it's installed that way.

See other posts on this:

I checked my own completely unmolested charcoal canister too. That nipple is left open from the factory. If you plug it, you're not allowing your charcoal canister to vent when it needs to (when intake isn't sucking the gasoline fumes).

in that picture you can see a little white thing off one of the hoses. its a oneway valve but im not sure if its for fuel vapor or vacuum/boost off the intake mani.

I finally got my car running like it should, it had really bad idle surge and some bad boost leaks, I just had Evo 8 injectors and Evo 8 fuel pump, 2g maf installed. I was boosting and when i went to shift the car lost about 75% of its power, i couldnt go past 40 mph, and when i pulled over and popped the hood the engine was shaking and running really rough. Noise coming from block, dont sound like its running on all 4 cylinders. I had 2 drive 5 miles to get it home and it didnt die or anything just ran like shit. Exhaust has loud bursts and is inconsistant. Just had this 6 bolt swaped into the 7 bolt 92 talon tsi. Plan on doing a compression test asap. Please help this is my daily driver and i have no idea where to begin and do not have the means to tear apart my motor and inspect everything. Please i am open to all suggestions i need help ASAP!!!:banghead:

sounds like some kind of fuel issue, i had a jeep that would act the same, turned out to be the fuel filter or something,

This is the deal you might have messed up on the 2g mass I fixed a dsm that had same exact issues. after 2 solid days of looking thru every think i checked the 2g mass on the 1g dsm and it ended who ever made it f'ed up on it and it was bad. another thing to check it make sure every thing is pluged in correctly cause that same thing will happen if you dont plug in your MAS

It sounds like a fuel or air problem but i can give you some other things to check. make sure your CAM is good. Make sure your timing marks line up. Do a compression test, BLT and also check your fuel pump. if you check all of these things ad they all pass then it's just that much less that could be wrong.
