All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

I think you're looking for "hydraulic lash adjusters" aka. lifters.

You may have a bad one.

well guy's i'm over here helping him out so I drianed the oil pan. And can you guess what the oil look's like here a hint it look's like brown with some gold in it. What in the motor would shave looking like brass or gold I can say i've had this one yet. I plan on pulling the motor today pulling the pan off and see what's going on in that block.
I don't think it's bearing (rod, main) never seem this color in the pan before And I've done alot of build's

yep :) thank you

NO not lifter's so (Brandon) just90gs and me took the motor out last night and sure enough after pulling the pan we struck gold =) so it looks like crank walk due to the bearings wear on the crank

heres some pics

now i have a question....im thinking about doing a 2.3 if im right all i need is a
4g64 crank (does year matter?), and custom pistons (where could i get the pistons) and what other odds and ends would i need? besides your normal bearings and rings and stuff.

same things been happening to me when the cars on in between the intake mani and the valve cover a weird low tick? any ideas

Im positive Steve answered it. Crackling by intake manifold with ignition on is most likely ISC. Follow the very easy test procedures at VFAQ Site - Visual Frequently Answered Questions under the intake section.

like was said, if it happens constantly, theres probably a problem. hows your idle?
Tyler.

Hell, to isolate, with the ignition off, you could unplug the isc. Then turn the ignition on and listen to the quiet. mmmmm.

Ok I changed my brakes about 2 months ago and they still are working and seem fine when I looked at them. As i am driving and I hit the brake pedal there is a simultaneous clap noise that happens when i hit the pedal. Each time i hit the pedal only when moving this happens. What could this be. **I do not think it has anything to do with the brakes because they look fine.

Try to isolate which axle its coming from. Once that is determined, remove the slide pins in the caliper bracket and either replace or re-lube them. Is there any uneven wear on the inside of the rotor? Such as rust on the rotor only on the inside but the pad is making contact with the outside of the rotor? thats a tell tale sign that that is your problem.

Are the brake pads shim there. They are on the top and bottom of the caliper bracket, the pads slide into them. If they are not there then the pads will move back and forth in the bracket possible causing the niose you hear.

I have good speakers on my PC, and i couldnt hear anything. It kinda sounded like a scary movie sequence. Maybe try setting the camera somewhere else. Also does this happen under acceleration, turning, backing up, in all gears, going fast, going slow.......i know when my transfer case went out it made a whining sound under hard acceleration, then went to a grinding sound.

Yea thats the noise....kinda like a monster grunting. Only happens after the engine is warm...usually does it around the main MPH indicators (10,20,30,40 etc). Happens when I accelerate...stay the same speed...or decelerate.

I really can't get it any closer than that. I comes from my passenger side foot area. I have crappy laptop speakers...and I can hear it. Perhaps use headphones? I used my computer to record it...so thats probably why the sound is so quiet.

If it is indeed the transfer case, the safety recall will cover it right? Will they make a huge fuss about how modded my engine is? Thanks!

I just looked up a bunch of throw out bearing videos. Those seem to be a constant noise...that doesn't discriminate between hot/cold starts.

My noise is intermittent and only happens when the engine is warm. It only lasts half a second and only happens during the main MPH markers.
