All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Quantity and pressure are not related. You can have 10 qts. of oil and no pressure. If it doesn't sound horrible, rev it a bit or take it for a short drive and see, pending on how you are breaking in the engine.

how do i check oil pressure? and the way i plan on breaking it in is not going over 300 rpm for 1000 miles

oh and thanks for the help guys:thumb:

300 rpm? That HAS to be a typo. :)

When you installed them, did you pump them up in oil, and then depress the plunger and fully drain them?

oops sorry i meant 3000. and wait your soupposed to completely drain them? thats not what the book says. i have the 3 main books for the car you know the ones that mechanics and dealerships got.

bleeding the lifters is a simple process. All you have to do is get a container full of desiel fuel. Make sure it is enough to fully submerge the lifters while they are standing straight up. Next use a pin or small paper clip and insert it into the hole in the top. Depress it a couple of times and you should see oil come out. Once there is no more oil coming out you should be good. Repeat with all the lifters and as everyone has said the ticking should leave after a couple minutes of idling.

ok so we redid the lifters and then we started the car ran it for like 20 min. the ticking got quiet almost stopped at idel but when we pressed a little gas it got louder agian is that normal. like untill i drive it?

Ok lets figure this out... It is ticking- not knocking. right... Can you put a screwdriver on the valve cover and listen to the butt end of it and try to pin point the ticking? When my car was making this god aweful knocking sound i went all over the place on the engine and just listened. Everything was ok and I put it on the exhaust and i heard the loud knocking. Came out to be my exhaust as it pulsed at low rpms would tap the body of my car... You need to calm TF down and start slow.. If it is lifter tick then relax...

yes its ticking. i mean it kind of stops but they starts up agian. and i have the specaiil stetiscope thing that lets u hear in side the engine and i hear it the most when i put it on the exhaust manifold.

in my experience valve ticking goes away after being exposed to decent oil presure. If it continues after a few minutes of idling and driving around I would start looking into injector tap. How far are you into on your injectors? How many miles i should ask.

well i dont know cause i bought the injectors used the guy said there are about 5000 miles on them so idk. and the engine overall has 0 miles on it

Hey my car is making this wierd sound and Im not sure what it is. I dont know much about cars so I dont really wanna mess with it until I learn some more. Anyways its like a ringing sound sort of and its constant whenever the car is on. A friend said that its coming from the Air intake manifold but he didnt know what to do so I dont know if he was even right. I figured somebody might have had this problem before. I recorded a video and posted it on youtube. Help is appreciated LOL..its a 98 GS

:hmm: are you only hearing it by the intake manifold? how are your electronics working? because alternaters when the bearing goes out it can make a high pitch whinning sound but it usually really not that loud untill it is really bad, i would use the screwdriver trick and check as many moving parts as you can

Hard to tell but it does sound like its coming from the intake manifold. The electronics are working fine. I dont believe it is the alternator as I had the squealing from the alternator at one point and it turned out to be a loose bearing I believe I was told. I had someone look at it and he wasnt sure but he did say it was from the intake manifold.

:hmm: i would check any sensor that are attached to the intake manifold like the iat and see if it is loose and if the sound is air escaping out of it, or do a smoke test

Check the seals on your injectors. Although ti does sound kind of like metal ringing. I know on my Camaro 3 of the seals were bad when I first got it and it sounded similar (with less of a metal sound).
