All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Also I would check your a/c compressor if you recently started using the a/c again. It sounds to me that it's coming from the timing belt cover area.

that video sounds to me like your belt is grinding away at your timing cover,

probably around harmonic balancer.

check this thread
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/pro...y-harmonic-dampener-just-time-pics-video.html

even though you are not getting any belt squeal your balancer may have seperated .

if no visual damage to your belts or timing cover, I would inspect your timing, and balance shaft belts asap.
could be a balance shaft belt let go and now rubbing/flapping around with your timing belt.

Last night I jacked it up and took the wheel off to see the harmonic dampener. Started the car. It looked like it was moving back and forth. I talked to a few other people and they said pull the valve cover and look around and if thats not the problem its probably one of your belts or pulleys.
Would the harmonic dampener make that kind of noise? The noise is coming from the driver side near the firewall.

Your balancer is separating from the rubber. You shouldn't see any movement in it other than it spinning. Take it off, my bet is that it's either just about to fall apart or will come apart in your hands.

So today we were driving in my buddies stock 96 gst. We were on the highway and he down shifted into 3rd to get around this old lady and then we got off the exit. As we were going off the exit the car shut off by itself. So we started it back up and it began to make this ticking noise. After hearing this we drove straight home, while driving to his house the noise became louder and louder like something was knocking. When we pulled into his drive way the overflow coolant tank spilled a little fluid out and the car was still making the loud knocking noise. Any ideas of what it could be? water pump maybe or pullies?

yeah check and make sure you can turn the water pump but it almost sounds like it overheated pretty good to overflow the overflow tank. you may be looking into a headgasket blown possibly more if theres a loud ticking noise. good idea would be to start with a compression and leak down test to check where to go next.

Ok. Where can I buy another OEM one? I've read to stay away from the local parts stores and just go with OEM. I've read threads about the brand dorman and they weren't good. I want to do this right the first time so I dont have to worry about it.

if its a wristpin or rod it should change pitch with engine rpms. A rod usually but not always will knock upon deceleration. It depends. Post a video if you could too many times ive read this same thread and its lifter noise. Or the noise isnt as drastic as the OP stated.
Its hard to diagnose a knocking noise with the symptoms you listed. And to answer your qustion Ive never heard a water pump knock

Okay guys hope you can help me out I'm stumped.

Okay so any over 70 mph my front left wheel (driver side) makes this weird popping/ hard vibrating noise! Almost as if the control arm is bouncing up and down or somehtin.
I do know there is small tear in the front lower ball joint. I'm trying to figure out if this is the issue or if its possibly the hub bearings or even tie rods.

Its only the front left one. I don't feel much from the steering wheel, but the hard vibrating noise is VERY loud. I don't know how to really discribe this guys sorry. But help me out! PLEASE!! THANKS!!!! :thumb:

Car facts:
99 gst
stupid crappy struts with skunk2 sleeves (put on before I bought car)
125k miles

Have you done a bounce test on all four corners to make sure your struts are OK (push down hard on the corner and when released, the corner shouldn't bounce more than 1-1/2 times)? If they're definitely fine, then it does sound like problems with the left control arm/ball joint or maybe the left steering link joint. What does the front tire wear look like (both sides) and when was the last time you had an alignment?

By the way, if there's a split boot, you need to do something about it.

Well I'm thinking of replacing the hubs, ball joints, and tie rods. Shocks are good.

Tires are brand new (less then 50 miles) that also included alignment and balance blah blah blah
+1 for Kuhmo Esta ASX they're all around awesome!

hey guys ok i need some help. me and my brother just finished buiilding a new engine 6 bolt and putting it in my 2 g gsx. we went to start the car for the first time and it started right up... but there is a this ticking noise. we have no clue what it is. we thoought it was the lifters since thats like the only hing i didnt replace but i just got new ones put them in and the noise is still there! Help me please

The lifters will tick for a while. After I installed my new 3g lifters they ticked very loud for 50 or so miles and then went to nothing.

You might also be hearing the injectors clicking.

well that makes sense becase when i first put it together we had put in 2 new lifters and then started the acar and the ticking noise was there. so i thoght that more were bad so thats when i bought the rest.

and aboutthe injectors i have FIC 650s they were used so idk

The lifters will tick for 10 or so mins. Please edit the title name. There is too many HELP ASAP or HELP ME PLEASE threads and if someone like yourself was searching engine tick how in the heck would they find this tread when its HELP ASAP?

In the rules of the forums it states to use a descriptive title.

By the way, let it idle for about 15 mins and see if the noise goes away.
