I took my 92' AWD Auto to the shop they gave me a whole laundry list of things wrong with the motor/tranny, i paid them and after 4 months car comes home for 10 mins dies and then refuses to stay started I took it back and there saying its the "Air Idle Valve" causing the problem but it randomly sputters really bad occasionally and i was told due to the starting problem and the sputtering it may be the timing thats the problem:confused: so I was wondering if anyone could help me because I'm very inexperienced with motors and i kinda feel like I'm being ripped off due to my lack of knowledge on the situation

i need a little more information as to what the problem is. what does it do from cold start till the problem occurs. also what have you or the shop done to the car to try and fix it. Sounds like a coil or something spark related to me.

the entire tranny needed to be rebuilt,as for the motor they said the flywheel was broken and completely seperate from the motor also the "fuel injector seals, rear seal, main seal, 6 bent valves, entire head needed resurfacing, head gasket, timing belt, and torque converter" are all parts that are listed on the repair order that had to be included to get the car to be drivable again

there isn't really a pattern it just randomly dies every now and then and while i was getting on the highway it dropped from 6k rpm to 0 and the motor went quiet like if it died out then jumped up to 3500 rpm like if it shut off while it shifted or something

find someone with a good ignition modual, this is the one by the coils, swap them out and see if this works. It is only a sparatic thing i am assuming, and it runs fine other than this intermitant problem.

Oh and i forgot it stalls if you dry rev the car and then its kinda tuff to get started again when he was at the shop he had it running and he accidently pushed the gas and it died so he had to use starter fluid to get it to fire up again(I heard thats a bad thing to do is that true?)

Sounds like they trying to cover up an issue by screwing around with idle speed which should be controlled by the computer.........you may have got jacked for your paycheck bro.

For starters I would go back to basics and look for the required air flow readings, 0/2 and coolant temp readings, as well as fuel trim long term/short term readings, and tps voltage/percentage readings from the actual values data stream on a decent scan tool... you must know how to interpret the values but if you are familiar with this then you can narrow down the possible causes for this behavior......under no circumstances should you ever have to start a car with electronic engine management with ether or starter fluid or anything else....this can indicate bad cam timing, bad karman vortex sensor, bad coolant temp sensor, bad tps,or a bad 0/2 SENSOR.....Essentially any electronic sensor that controls fuel delivery, which sounds like where you should start, since your tech decided it was acceptable to start a vehicle that was already "repaired" with starting fluid.

This is a concern to me because you dumped your hard earned money into a shop to fix your car and your still having to screw with it which isn't right if the heads been removed the trans has been rebuilt and everything's been resealed.....when the head comes off of an old car all the vacuum lines should get replaced unless they're form fit special order hoses that are expensive and you've decided otherwise. Then it becomes your baby because the shop let you decide not to replace them.....that said your car should perform like it did when it was a youngster with 40k miles on it,when you have that amount of work done.....

Double check his work from beginning to end and question it if you find something unsatisfactory.....then make em get it right ....remember that they're end of the contract with you is to repair the car they way the customer see's fit if you agreed to pay them what they ask for the repair job that they wrote up......
Good luck with it sir.....

Thanks what you said is a foreign language to me but a buddy of mine who i contacted later on from when i picked it up is really good with DSM's and cars in general for that matter so I'll ask him to double check what you wrote down at his shop and see if he can get it figured out for me so i know where to proceed from there.Thank you again I really appreciate your advice and time for helping me out sorry for responding so late but my job and family have had me pretty busy lately
