Here it is. I've got a '98 GS w/ the 420a, automatic transmission in it. I was driving down the road at about 55 mph and needed to pass someone. Basically floored it to get around 'em. As soon as I did, it started knocking. I was only about a mile away from work so I drove it the rest of the way and parked it. After work, I started it up. Not smart, I know. It ran until it warmed up, then died. Won't start again. Had it towed to my garage where it's sat for the last 2 years w/ the majority of the fluids drained (Gas, Oil, Coolant). Need to get her runnin' again.

I've had people tell me it's the engine, others say transmission. I'm going to be picking up a OBD II scanner soon, but would like to get some of your guys' input as to where to start if no codes are pulled from the scanner. Not sure if you can pull codes without the motor running.

Any help will be more than appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The engine doesn't have to be running to read codes. Just make sure the key is turned as far as possible without turning over the engine.

i have a 99 eclipse rs and its makes a noise when i go to take off in 1st and when i get into 2nd but it acts fine when i go through the rest of the gears. I have been working on this car for over a year now and this problem didnt start until i changed the clutch. I dont know if that is the problem or what .. Please Help

Yea a compression test would be great to do. It would also be beneficial to do vacuum leak test too.

This sounds more like and engine problem rather a transmission issue just for the fact that the engine died will standing still.

Signs for if the tranny would be bad would be it having a hard time getting up to speed right after it shifted gears or the tranny wont shift at all in an automatic.
