So i just bought my friends 96 TSI AWD. I finished up the head gasket job last night and put everything back together. Me and my buddy took it out for a ride and every stoplight/stop sign i press the clutch and slow down and the RPMs fall off and the engine dies. The battery light came on and my front O2 sensor voltage was really low. Also my turbo timer read only 11.0 volts when i would restart it. Could it be the voltage regulator?

I really do not know if this applies to you since you are running link.

However, the ECU sometimes takes time to re-learn its program. I disconnected my battery to work on something else. I did NOTHING to my engine. When I fired it up it would idle but as soon as it got warm, would stall every time I pressed in the clutch.

The only thing that I did was drive it about 100 miles, after the ECU re-learned the engine, it ran fine.

Sounds like begining stage of crankwalk, might want to check you crank sensor. Sucks you just had the timing cover off for the headgasket.Once you get the cover off start the car let it idle then have a buddy push the clutch in while you look at the sensor/crank.If the crank moves and touches the sensor it will kill the car, that means a main bearing is going on you.Time for a rebuild if thats the case.

it can't be crankwalk. I have a 2.4 block and i've never heard of them walkin'. And it only does it when i'm driving and the RPMs fall from like 2k.

I got the same exact problem. Freshly built motor with larger / stronger crank bearing to prevent crankwalk (or so claims the guy who built the motor for me). I also have a new ACT 2600, XACT flywheel, new clutch fork, pivot ball, and throw out bearing.

Mine only does it but not all the time. Sometimes it's fine. I'll check for CW but I hope it's not it.

I press the clutch and the motor dies.

Other times it's fine and normal. Any thoughts? Could it be something with the clutch? TOB? Slave cylinder?

Thanks,

Tom
