engine break in/1st oil change???

So I just did the 20 mile oil change for my new motor. The oil was no where as clean as I expected it to be. I guess you could say it didnt look like honey but more like maple syrup. Is this normal for only a couple start ups and 20 miles? I tried to follow the motoman break in but it needed adjustments and such before I was able to drive it. Thats the reason for the couple start ups before the 20 mile drive. Also, I keep getting oil residue around my oil cap but the oil cap seems perfect. High crankcase pressure maybe? Builder said leakdown was only 2-3%. Im hoping my next oil change will show more cleanliness.

The first oil drained from the engine will look nasty when you drain it. There is a lot of material in there from the rings breaking in.

You could just have a bad oil cap seal. If you don't know the condition of it or how old it is, you should pick up a new one for a better seal. Simple cheap fix.

Take the cap off and feel the rubber gasket on it. If it is hard than you need a new gasket or just a new oil cap.

Don't use synthetic, or the thing will never break in.

With 20 miles on it, if you havent broken it in using Motomans method, it will never break in.

I'd drive it normally, no constant speed driving for the 1st 500 miles, with oil changes of the first 50, 100, 200 then up to 500.

Give it a small, high speed blip once in a while to help seat the rings when they shear off the raised edges of the grooves in those honed cylinders.
