Hi people, so I bought my gst last month, and in order to register it under my name, it has to pass emissions. I've read that there is no way that it will pass with the web cams, I already got some oem cams that I'll put in this weekend, the other thing is that it has a test pipe welded on, would this be a real problem? Has anybody passed with one on? Last question, should I turned down the boost, its set at 16psi right now, would that help or not? Any help is appreciated.

unless California laws are different, in Wisconsin as long as you don't have a check engine light on you will with flying colors pass. My 97 gst had all emissions deleted, and all i did was unplug the battery few block down the road and plug it back in. Check engine went off, went threw and passed.

why dont you just get the stock cams put back in turn the boost down goto emissions pass, and then go back with your setup.

I know Cali has much stricter laws than any other state but if you have no check engine light and have a catalytic converter present you should pass. I don't know how well they check in Cali but for our emission tests in Ohio they aren't the brightest people there.... I have no cat no my car so i just take 2 converter covers and bolt them on to my exhaust so it looks like i have a cat and i have passed numerous times this way...

I was planning on returning the car to the way it was after it passed, well I guess I can put on some converters to make it look like there is on, the car is pretty low, and you really can't see underneath it, I guess I'll just take my chances and see what happens. By the way, what is a safe boost level to drop it too?

Most likely you will fail if its not completey stock depends where in cali you are? Where I live they don't really check.

It also depends on who you know ;). Um in not quite sure wether it matters if your running 16 psi or not cus it doesn't seem like those guys at the smog shop actually run the car to the point in which it starts to make some serious boost.

Well that sucks

:hmm: Another thing that sucks is that since you seem to be a new member you won't find as many members in here who will be willing to give out as much info into finding the right shop that can help you pass smog....

1: no cat = you dont pass smog light or no light
2. boost wont affect it cuase they dont run it to the point where your turbo is really working that much anyways.
3.depends how well your car is tuned you can get way with cams but depending what cams you have.

plain and simple its like some members said its who you know that can get your smog done and your not gana get much help from us telling you who can cause we dont know if your just trying to flush people our or not.

it dont matter if your light dont turn on for no cat. the sniffer will still pick up the insane increase on carbons coming out your exhaust.

Smog my car today completely stock except for my boost controller.
My HC ppm(parts per million)was almost limit. Limit being 60 and I hit 59.
The highest they go speed wise is 25 or 35 mph if I remember correctly. I think it will be in third gear which isn't enough for boost to come on if it's a t25.
Tech said it's likely plug, wires, catalytic converter or coil pack related.
Sorry to break it to you but I'm sure you have no chance of passing without a stock catalytic converter. And yes upgraded cams will completely destroy you. I was lazy and smog mines with 4 days left, hehehe. Lucky tripple A have dmv inside to avoid long lines.
Espically if it's a turbo car you can't risk anything in cali.
And oh, stupid ecu wasn't monitor ready so I went through two tech guys. The third one finally got it to read with some Scan tool.
Good luck guy!

Whenever you take your car to smog make sure they run it first to check if it pass before put in the computer, because once they put it in, it will send the information wright away and if it doesn't pass they will know that and then next time you will get a (SMOG TEST ONLY), which is more strict. They send you to test only to make sure your car is 100% good. this is way way more strict. (harder to pass).
It happens to me and I been getting this D### Test Only every time.

I had to smog my 98 when i lived in phoenix and they adopted the exact same emission laws as cali. as long as you4 cel is off and nothing comes up when they read for codes they will just do an underhood inspection and a gas cap pressure check. So as long as your underhood emission control devices are there(chances are they wont realize it if they arent) and you pass the gas cap check you will be fine. Most of the time they dont check for a cat because they assume without a cat or just a bad cat then you will have a cel thrown. And i can pretty much guarantee they wont look if its pretty well lowered. But you should be fine with the cams because anything 96 and newer they just run codes and dont actually test it with a five gas analyzer at idle or on a dyno. Even if you fail they will give you a paper to get 10 day temp tags and register the car until you are able to fix the problems and pass the tests. Good luck.

Wrong.... I passed twice at TEST ONLY stations with a 3in turbo back exhaust. (3in high flow cat, not stock)

Right there with ya 98awddsm. Id say just take it in if you fail they will tell you why and you can fix it and get it retested for no charge. Im pretty sure you will pass though.

It could depend on the person who is doing it, because my car didn't pass regular smog with stock engine and a bad Catalytic, and no check light on. it looked pretty good, you know, all running smooth had it for 2 years with out braking down, I was almost sure that it was going to pass, but never did. and after that I been getting that Test Only.

Duh forgot. My nephews gst passed with an exhaust.:ohdamn: My mind went blink while typing that!WTF

You mean no honey comb of any sort inside the cat?
Proof or it's not real.:D
It's just that I don't know anyone in cali who did pass without a stock cat. 3in Exhaust okay but no stock cat, no.

Miguel you probably failed with the bad cat because they had to actually ise the five gas analyzer sice it is a 95.96 and newer they wont do an actual gas test just obd reading and underhood visual wih gas cap test. His is a 98 and therefore they shouldnt be using a gas analyzer at any point.

i actually have a full 3inch turbo back with a 3 inch hi flow cat and past on test only place once already.

Actually, I did know someone who would always pass my vehicles, I have a 92 Chevy pick up that I used for work, and that thing polluts the air so much, its unbelievable, but the guy would always pass it for me, but when I brought in the gst, he told me he couldn't help me. The other thing is that I'm waiting of my ecu that I bought from DSM chips, Jeff said he would set the emission controls to ready, to make of easier to pass, so I'll wait till I get and then I'll just try my luck.
