my battery was low so i hooked on a battery charger while the battery was still connected to the car. i set it on engine starter mode, tried to start it and nothing happened. it was worst than when the charger was not connected.

I set it on charge and let it charge. when taking off the negative charger cable it made a small spark and a puff of smoke.

Before this spark happened, the car would make a noise indicating that the car was trying to start but couldn't because of low voltage. sort of like a whining sound coming from the starter.

Now IT makes no noise. just a clicking sound from the interior when i turn the key.

Also now the interior lights, pop up motor, seat belts, power locks, and windows don't work. i checked all fuses inside the car and their all good. I checked all sub fuse links and dedicated fuses links under the hood and their good as well. main fuses are also good.

Any advice? it's a 91 tsi fwd

How old is your battery?

Did you check the fuses by looking at them or by measuring them?

Have you cleaned the battery terminals?

What is battery voltage?

There are too many possibilities right now. You need to get out the multimeter and start checking voltages to identify where you have power and where you don't.

alright i had the same problem... check the relays and wires leaveing the fusebox. i had a bad relay and i forget what fuse it is i believe its an 80amp main. should be the main black fuse which is where the posative cable connects to the fuse box. also take a voltmeter and see if the charger is working. sometimes the fuse int he charger will blow and it will still buzz like its working but no juice is comeing from the cables. check those things and post back. i dont remember if my 90 had a fuseable link or not...

i used my multimeter. all fuses have continuity. i'm thinking it's some kind of relay also. but all other electrical componets work even the radio. just the ones i mentioned before don't work

The only thing those have in common is the 80A alternator fuse.

WHEN YOU SAY MAIN, ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE THE FUSES CONNECTED TO THE POSITIVE BATTERY TEMINAL.

I HAVE A NON ABS TALON SO I ONLY HAVE THREE FUSES AT THE POSITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL. IF YOUR TALKING ABOUT THAT ONE THAN ALL THREE ARE ALSO GOOD.

THE ONLY FUSE I DID NOT CHECK IS THE ONE THAT THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE LEAVES THE FUSE BOX AND GOES TO THE BATTERY. THAT IS THE ONE WITH THE POSITIVE CABLE COMING DIRECTLY FROM THE ALTERNATOR AND THAN ANOTHER CABLE GOING RIGHT TO THE BATTERY POSITVE TERMINAL. NO MATTER HOW HARD I PULL THAT FUSE WON'T COME OUT. THE WHOLE FUSE BOX TRIES TO MOVE WHEN I PULL ON IT. IS THERE A SPECIAL WAY TO GET IT OUT?
