My car currently has 2 O2 sensors, one in the O2 housing off the turbo and one at the bend of the downpipe off the turbo for the Innovate AFR. This seems redundant since the Innovate box has an output that can be used by the ECU so realistically I only need one O2 sensor... right?

Assuming I'm not on crack I figure I could use one of the bungs that is already in the exhaust for the EGT, I'm also assuming I should keep the O2 sensor at the turbo so is the bung at the bend of the down pipe tooo far south to get an accurate EGT reading? If so, , where should it go?

The only problem with putting it into the manifold is it can break or melt and destroy the turbo. But it will be more accurate in the manifold

good poinr.

how often do you think they fail though? i've never seen one fail before, sure it happens, just never seen it before.

I personally will run mine in the o2 housing and the WBO2 as close as humanly possible to that. Way more accurate to tune. All EGT is #1 will tell you is if that cylinder is going leaner than the others.

Have 4 EGT's and a Innovate LM1 or something similar and really watch each cylinder. :)

i have seen a few fail because they werent operating correctly and the car was leaner then what the temp was showing and one melted. Ive seen one break off also. Not good, i run mine 1" after my turbine housing. A good rule of thumb is to add 100 degrees to your reading because the exhaust before the turbine housing will be hotter because its being restricted more then after the turbo.

Leave the wideband sensor where its at, leave the stock o2 sensor where its at, and dont even run the EGT.

Basically, an EGT sensor becomes worthless because you already have a wideband. EGT sensors were used before widebands were widely available to monitor exhaust temps. The idea was the higher the exhaust gas exiting the cylinder, the leaner that cylinder was running. The reason it was placed in the #1 runner was because that runner in particular runs the hottest on average. So the idea was if there was a lean condition in the engine you would see it at the #1 runner first. Since a wideband accomplishes the same goal, does it more accurately and is easier to read, you dont need the EGT.

I hope this simplifies things for you.

I personally will run mine in the o2 housing and the WBO2 as close as humanly possible to that.

Placing your WB 02 Sensor that close to the turbo and all that heat will dramatically shorten it's life...bad idea unless you are just using it to tune and then pulling it out.

egt should be as close to piston #1 exhaust port as possible. like in the manifold.

^ Agreed... Although others have said the EGT gauge is a thing of the past, I still run mine in the #1 runner. The reason for choosing #1 vs any other cylinder isn't that #1 runs hotter then any other cylinder, it is because it is the last cylinder to get fuel via the stock configuration of the fuel rail (feed on #4, return on #1) and can cause #1 to run hotter in a low fuel delivery state.

I would think that #3 actually runs the hottest as it has 2 REALLY PISSED OFF neighbors :)

BTW, nice to see another Bay Area DSMer on the forums! I'm in SJ as well... You should hit up the Milpitas meet sometime man, theres a lot of good people there:

i don't think there is a thing as too much information about how your car is running. egt isn't the hardest gauge to install, so why not have it? if nothing else it looks like you know what your doing :D

All good comments!
Thanks all!

BTW, I might be at the next DSM meet if I'm running by then.
