I'm trying to get a good idea where others have put their EGT probes on our cars. I got an SAFC-2 and i want to install the gauge at the same time. Reading i heard #4 cylinder. But i was also thinking of installing on the Downpipe right after the turbo and minusing a few degrees to compensate. Easier install with no damage to Turbo if probe breaks. All suggestions/recommendations welcome.

Thanks

i just put mine in from dakota digital
a pic of the placement is in my profile
i was going to tap #4 cylinder because that is what hahn's techs recommended when i talked to them
but the elbow for the IC piping would get in the way so i tapped between #3 and #4 on the hahn manifold it is the last flat part before the weld on top
it was simple to tap and install but i did have the engine running to blow out any shavings

i used tap magic to help cut the threads and it worked beautifully
to seal the fitting that the probe screws into i used a muffler repair paste called inferno
it dries hard as a rock and withstands temps to 2000 degrees
in the DP just gives lower readings of course plus an overall idea of how the enigine is running not specifc temp from a specific cylinder

hope this helps

I had mine tapped by a mechanic... I dont feel comfortable doin that stuff myself. Here's mine on my lovely rusted mani. LOL

i was a little nervous about it at first
but the charge that i was quoted put me over the top as far as decisions go
you just pick your spot and mark it with a punch so the drill bit wont walk
then crank the car
start with a tiny bit and keep working your way up until you get to the size bit you need as it says on the tap

for a 1/4 NPT fitting you need a 37/64 bit which is very hard to find so a 9/16 will work as well
it will be a tight fit but it will work
just keep everything oiled
i would do a couple of bit sizes then cut off the car
let it cool and use a magnet to clean out any shavings that may be around

you gradually increase the bit size so that any shavings that dont get shot out the hole are too small to do any damage

when you tap keep it oiled
do a about an eighth to a quarter turn clockwise
then about a half a turn counter clockwise to clean the threads

nothing too it just remember to keep the tap straight

If you read the autometer instructions it says to place after turbo. There is a real good post on here about placement. The article reads of how stupid the egt gauge really is. It is more just a monitor nothing else.

Thanks for all the info. I got mine installed with pretty much no problems. Next i was wondering what kind of temperatures you guys are seeing at that location. i usually get between 1000-1200 normal operating. At 8psi she usually goes up to 1400 maybe a little higher. I still think i might be running a little lean even though my A/F gauge says im good.

What do you think?

nOt sure on the 420a, but I know on the 4g63's (mine at least) #2 seems to run leaner than the rest. unfortunately my bung is in #1 runner though :notgood:

i am getting around 830ish for idle
1200-1300 part throttle cruising
and at 10psi about 1550ish depending on if i am going on a hill or not
egt probe is between 3rd and 4th runner

Where are you guys getting #4 from? I've always heard #1. WTF

However, I tend to agree that after the turbo's best, for the inevitable day (8 months from now) that the probe fails. I'd just as soon not feed the shrapnel to the blades.

perhaps it is the #1 cylinder for the 4g63, but the general concensus for the 420a is the #4 cylinder :thumb:

i know that on 2gnt there are many posts suggestions #4

i just went with general consensus as well
