1G EGR block off plate specs

Now that I passed my last emissions test ever for this car... I want to keep all carbon out of the intake tract. Im going to build me an EGR block off plate. No im not gonna use beer can aluminum. I was exploring some options.

Auminum or Stainless steel or Copper?
1/16" or 1/8" or 1/4" ?????

I see that the STM one is aluminum... i suppose aluminum wont melt if enough is used. I also saw someone bought a copper one, better idea? Also what would be a minimum thickness? i would like to just block it off, but i like the idea of having the option to completely remove it. If removed what is the minimum thickness? if just blocking what is the min and max range for thickness (i want it to fit. i dont want it to melt)

Ive honestly seen people use a beer can, so i suppose if your not going over board with the antilag anything will work.

But why not just buy the stm piece. Its like $18 and comes with ss countersunk bolts. Looks great.

I have the STM plate. Installed easy, and looks clean.

Trace the pattern using the EGR onto some 1/8" aluminum and cut it out, cut a gasket from a sheet of generic gasket material, and call it a day.

Or do as stated above and just buy one...it ain't rocket science.

BTW - If you are worried about any type of metal getting hot enough to melt on the intake manifold, you have some serious issues to deal with.

I have a few laying around you can have one for free since i don't know to many people with stock intake manifolds.

They're on eBay for $10 shipped.

But if you want to build your own, use any flat steel or aluminum. Thickness doesn't really matter. Anything between .040"-.125" will work fine.

You can also get them off of the 4G37 (1.8L) 1g DSMs at any junkyard. They came from the factory with an OEM Mitsubishi blockoff plate.

I was on a real DIY spree. I was gonna fab up a vent plate for guages and i figured id go ahead and add do it all with one peice, i have most/all of the tools to get it done up. ill have a 12x12x.125 peice of aluminum and thats more than enough.

If i feel lazy though, i may just grab one next time i hit up a junkyard.

also, would the factory mitsu block off plate work under the egr or can it only be used without the egr?

I used a fat piece of rubber and just cut holes for the bolts and but the egr valve back on.

Thats a horrid idea. Its exhaust gas recirculation. The gasket on them is metal..... Use a few layers of pop can, or whatever sheet metal you have laying around.

Yes, you can keep the EGR there with a block off plate, but there's no point. It's not doing anything other than taking up space. No reason not to ditch the dead weight.


And using rubber is a terrible idea.

Well as it turns out.... I have some leaky TB seals... looks like i have no choice but to go the STM route with my mil.spec seal order...

Are you sure? Cause i have unplugged mine before and i had a CEL.

I am sure that on the OP's 1g, there will be no CEL for removing the EGR or any other emissions device. I didn't say that was the case on your 2g 420a. Those are two different cars with different emissions and ECU setups (and in your case different engines). On a 2g you will get a CEL for blocking off the EGR valve.

This thread pertains to the egr system on 4g63 cars. you might want to find a thread for the 420a cars. They are entirely different.
