You may never know why they added it, but it's for sure that it is not factory. Some of your photos are tough to see exact connections in, but those green wires are shielded wires, with a metallic inner shield and a non-jacketed drain wire.

One of those wires goes to the knock sensor so the extra shielding on the wire helps to prevent false signals.

The group of black wires with the electrical cap is the ground for the sensors including your maf, manifold pressure, and others so that they get accurate readings, strongly unaffected by what is happening electrically in the rest of the car.

The DSM Maintenance guide resource here will show you the factory wiring and you'll be able to see what is factory and what is not and learn what can be removed.

Can anyone confirm how many sensor ground wires should be in that bundle ?
I’m understanding 4 wires but not sure and need verification. Mine had 5 but want to make sure before I snip it out.

And reason for my harness being spliced there is because he seems to have had a wide band sensor simulating the o2 sensor. This car came with ecm link.
