Hi all, I'm new here (obviously) and I need some advice on what I should buy for the motor of my 96 Eclipse Non-turbo. I need a turbo but I can't find any for a decent price that comes with all the necessities. I only have an aftermarket cold air intake so any help getting me some cheap quick power bolt-ons would be very helpful and appreciated.

Hes saying that you should get a eclipse with a 4g63 which is the mitsu engine and you have the neon engine. Nothing wrong with that because THIS SITE supports 420a and 4g63 and the 420 has been proven even though its a dodge product. One guy on here i know of for a fact has seen 600 hp out of a 420 so if thats not enough hp to prove its worthy then i dunno what to tell you. Read everything you can and use the search feature.

Once i had a 93 TSI, now i have two 2gnt and yes their is a big difference in Power!!! One is in the process of getting a turbo :hellyeah: if you want bolt-ons for now you don't half to spend big money on parts I would recommend Ebay. Almost all of my bolt-ons i got from their:sneaky: I saw some improvement but not much:cry:

As for a turbo it is best to build a kit (if you don't have the money to buy one) It will save you some money, and you can customize it to your liking:thumb:

Just like TRSblader wrote, do a complete once-over on the car to make sure all of your preventive maintenance is up to date. Then read and read some more. This site does have a ton of info on the 420a; it is a capable power plant. I certainly prefer the 4g63, but mostly it is because I have more experience with it and a metric ton of spares lying around.
Now, if you want to turbocharge your engine you will have to spend many hours reading. This site is great for info, there are a few Neon-specific sites that you could look at, and you should read "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell. I recommend it to everyone as it is a ground-zero start for those who may have never dealt with turbocharged engines before. Set a goal then work to achieve it. Try to decypher what is BS and what is not in your quest for good knowledge. Do some experimenting yourself when money and dyno time allows. I see that since you are on a limited budget, you may not have a ton of money to experiment with; that you need to put every dollar of your budget to a proven power adder.........I completely understand! In that case, I suggest doing a PM on your car, keeping the cold air intake in place, install a proven header/exhaust system, add nitrous kit and all the additional necessities that go along with it (colder plugs, higher volume fuel pump (I wouldn't chance it), blow-down tube for your bottle, a bottle warmer and remote valve opener (not a necessity, but I like not having to get out at a stop light and turn on my bottle to bust someone's ass), and a WIDEBAND O2 set-up or some DYNO TIME!
If you cannot afford to monitor the engine when you put more air into it, you will not be able to afford to replace the engine that you broke.................spend the coin and make sure you have enough fuel pill for your nitrous pill and that you are not getting knock. You may have to consider (find out how to) retard the timing for the nitrous shot. Someone has done it; find their information. READ, READ, READ!
There are TONS of folks who run nitrous on these Neon engines. They will give you more guidance, but you have to search them out. They aren't going to stop you on the side of the road and ask if you need help with your nitrous kit because your car seemed a little slow. You are gonna have to find them.
Be safe!

There should never be any banter of buying "this instead of that" :banghead:

Seeing as how you want cheap quick power, you forgot one thing: reliability. There are alot of people that just want to slap power onto the 420a that end up like I did at first: fried injectors, leaking headgasket, and a burnt up clutch. You are going to have to pick 2 out of the 3: Cheap, Reliable, Power. I wouldn't suggest the first of the 3. You can follow the route outlined in the build thread for a well proven set of steps to follow. That said, here's what I would do.

First off, follow the advice of the others when it comes to maintenence. We have a high compression engine so throwing boost onto a poorly maintained 420A will blow it up for sure. Second off, DO NOT follow the advice to get a SAFC to tune with. Unless you plan on staying NA, they will not work for our cars. Our Map sensor is what controls the SAFC reading. When under boost, our MAP sensor is being tricked by either a FCD(electrical signal clamp) or a Missing Link (Check Valve)to not see boost (to prevent fuel cut), so once you hit boost, you cannot tune fuel maps properly according to boost levels becuause the SAFC is only getting one limited signal.
Now, I would reccomend getting MSnS (MegaSquirt) FIRST! It's about 800 bucks for a full 420A kit with wideband o2. From there it doesn't matter what you add to your engine, you'll be able to tune it with MSnS. After that look into building your own turbo kit. There are plenty of options out there and it can be overwhelming at first. Especially when you get alot of mixed info and it's up to you to filter out the BS. Hahn makes a pretty comprehensive turbo kit if you can't handle that much homework, but it's kind of pricey. It has everything you need to boost, but like I said, kind of pricey.

Come up with a definitive goal for your car. Be it your wished for 1/4 mile time or your hoped for dyno results, figure it out. You'll keep yourself from wasting money on parts that you won't end up using in the final build. If you need more info, look at my earlier threads about turbo options and you are more than welcome to PM me. I've got gobs of info I am always willing to share. If you plan on making big HP or quick 1/4 times, there are a few more members I can point you towards that have helped me out immensly for next track season.:rocks:

If you're comfortable with doing some head work, you could always get a set of aftermarket cams for your 420a. They will give you some decent power, and you'll be able to retain them if you go turbo in the future. I've been thinking of a set of brian crower stage2 for myself. Might as well do the cams while you're doing all of the maintenace, since you'll most likely be replacing the timing belt anyways (if doing 60k service) There is a wealth of knowledge on this forum as well as plenty of people willing to help if needed. Again, read all that you can on the subject and make decisions on what your goals for the car are. This will help weed out all the unnecessary parts and save you some money. Good luck and enjoy your DSM!
