420A Eclipse 98 RS automatic problem help

Hello everybody i need help i have eclipse 98 RS auto transmission 420a engine and yesterday i was driving my car and it was fine i been driving it all day then all of a sudden it didnt want to shift to 2 gear it would just stay in first next day i turn it on then drove it it was shifting fine thought everything got fixed but i shut the car off then it started it again when i took off i been reading about limp mode and speed sensor but theres not alot of info on this can someone help me on this thanks

Any codes pop up when it happens?

Yea. if its going into limp mode it should have some codes. But first and foremost check the trans oil.
