Well i built my girl freind a 97 gts spyder converted auto to manual . My problem is the car will not boost past 9-10 psi !!. mods are crower 264-272 14b turbo 7cm, willy 255 pump , afpr 43.5 psi.ngk non protruding 7es plugs 3' down piple 3' exhaust test piple on, hallman bc. jeff (dsm chips) chip. Iv done a boost leak test 10 times compression test from timing belt side is 145psi 175psi 177psi 170psi . Iv change 14b turbo with another one samething 9-10psi ?? it has no exhaust leaks!!!! (Iv even put vice grips) yes vice grips on the wastegate flapper on the exhaust housing The car is very slugish bad gasmileag. :banghead: Well I found out the reason why the car wouldnt go ova 9psi. After all these tests and changing all these parts, it was the ebay downpipe. apparently the flex pipe that was only 3-4 months old, the inside of it had collapsed. Ill post pics of it soon . I was told from a guy at turbotrix (Bean) or Dean, that he has seen the flix pipes cause this kind of probloms. The inside of the flix pipe part of the downpipe had heat shrunk to the size of a quarter WTF so Think again before buying knock off stuff i think i learn my lesson LOL

first of all a leak after the turbo will have no reflection on the amount of boost and power the car has. Once the exhaust gas exits the o2 housing it is spent and has no value! Saying your downpipe is making you less power is ludicrous. Pre turbo exhaust leaks are what make it so you lose power. Trust me i had plenty of those a few weeks back. Try a new wastegate actuator.

correction i read the posting incorrectly, i thought it was some kind of leak, sounds like it just bottlenecked it to a 1" exhaust or so right there so there was lots of back pressure. Go with a cxracing downpipe, very thick flex section had it on for a year and a half and taken it off countless times. Still no problems

It's the flex-section, Not the downpipe. Buy a new $30 3" flex section and you still come out with a 3" downpipe, For half the cost of some.

Did you know there are alot of ''name-brand'' companies using ''knock-off'' parts, And just throwing their tags on them? Then, Selling them for big money, Making you think "you get what you pay for"...

Then the cost of welding if you can't.

Like who? Show me.

Had this happen on a Conquest a couple of years ago. Oddly had little noticeable effect on performance. Car did blow out the turbo flange gaskets. Found the flex pipe failure when we went to replace the gaskets.

Just adding this to here. . . You know, many companies are exporting their products to china and what not to be made there, as it is cheaper. Which means, a lot of other products (name brand and off brand) are made in the same building with the same materials, thus meaning off brand being just as good as name brand items. Very similar with generic foods, and name brand foods, many are made in the same factory, just different label. Also I currently run an ebay 3" cat back, and love it, sounds great, full 3", no rust, all for $180 shipped. I would buy another too.

The turbo flex style is supposed to be better. I am not indorsing any particular brand.

Vibrant TurboFlex Couplings w/ Interlock Liner

Vibrant's incredible TurboFlex flex coupling was designed for turbo or supercharger applications that require even more flow than standard flex coupling. They feature a smooth stainless steel interlock that helps exhaust flow, and reduces restriction

Oh, man. Two in one thread. Can you, as well as the other guy show me who is doing this? Or are you just talking out of your ass, too?

its quite common knowledge that people have been outsourcing building of products for some time now because of cheaper labor and material costs in other companies. If you really want someone to dive into it and get proof that SOME things are built in the same place and then sold under different labels im sure someone will be more than up to the task

agreed. You have a few options, weld on a new flex pipe like the ones posted or get a new downpipe! I got a new 3 inch downpipe from ebay for 90 shipped. Starts out at 2.75 inches for a inch or two then busts open to 3 inches. Just makes it easier to connect to o2 housings

I had the same issue...took me about 3 months to track it down.

Just to add to this, after I saw the issue I went to the local autoparts store and purchased a new flex section....I did 4 pulls and guess what...same issue! I ended up going to a muffler shop and purchased a new high preformance one and havnt had a issue with it. Its been almost 2 months and boosting 28psi daily. Would I purchase another down pipe from ebay...hell yea...you cannot beat the price and even if the flex section goes bad, just weld in a new peice and your good to go.

when this issue happened to you was the boost slow to come on too? I have the ebay downpipe as stated prior and now i am chasing down a very slow spool with no big boost leaks whatsoever and no pre turbo exhaust leaks. Im thinking excessive backpressure from something like this might be causing my slow spool

It will not only slow spool up but acuatually limit boost. The bigger the turbo the the more that boost will be limited. Ex.. I had a 16g... boost was limited to 15psi... threw on a hx35.. it dropped to 10psi max... I switched turbos to see if my turbo was going out. Took me 3 months to finally track down the flex issue.

i have an ebay downpipe had it one for a year and a half now but i am getting extremely slow spool on my evo 3. Its a 2.4l and cant get past 18 psi and that hits at like 5k rpms! Before on my side mount i was able to get 14psi on my 2.0l by like 3300. The 2.4 should make it spool much much faster. Im thinking its the downpipe necking down because there are no large boost leaks and no pre turbo leaks. Everything is tightened up. This is the only thing i can think of. And also only normal shaft play, very very little up and down and 0 in and out play. Normal for a journal bearing

also is there anyway of telling without cutting into the flex section because i dont want to cut into the exhaust unless i know for a fact this is the issue. Cant have the car out for long. If it is likely the downpipe ill just order up another one.

I wouldn't consider using any flex section that uses an inner braid liner. With as many times as I've seen them fail like in the pictures above, I'd rather only use the ones that are better designed.

Vibrant offers a style of flex section that uses an interlocking liner that won't fail like the braided inner liner. They're definitely worth the extra few bucks.
