i am going to order a timing tensioner soon, i have all the other parts for the timing belt job except that

my build date is Dec 94, so that makes me a "early" 95 right? so i do need the early 95 tensioner correct?

i just dont want to order the wrong one

If you have a DEC94 date, then your car is a 2G and the 95 will be just fine. I'm also sure any 7 bolt belt tensioner is the same from 92.5 through 99 but not exactly sure.

i thought the early 95 was untill 11/94. does your head have the bolt holes on it to bolt a cas in place? mine does. i would also like to know the answer to this.

thanks.

Take the old one off, there are 3 digits cast into it. you will either see 587 or 086 just mention that when you order.

i DD the car i cat take it off LOL

i will look at the CAS thing later though Thanks!

any one else?

ExtremePSI said that i need a early tensioner, something like may of 95 is when it switches from early to late 95??? idk

There is a different tensioner for the early '95 cars.

My car has a manufactured date of 12/3/94 and requires the early '95 tensioner (part number MD308587).

If you don't have CAPS, you can PM me your VIN and I can check it out for you.

Lol, me and bringing back threads from the dead.

My '95 has a 11/94 build date. So unless the motor was swapped, which i doubt. I must have a 1g 7bolt?

Im doing a complete maintainence overhaul and im at complete loss as to what auto timing belt tensioner i need.

I figure, all the other timing belt components are the same on all 2gs?

What's this i hear, '95 build dates before 12/94 had leftover 1g 7bolts and very large rear brake rotors?

Not that it matters much but, im lost as to what timing belt auto tensioner i need??

Call Extreme PSI, thats what i did and they told me what one to get. i needed the early 95 style

Ok I have not seen the answer yet but I am wondering if I can use the early 2g tensioner on a 99 gst, and if I can't why not? I don't really see a difference in them.

I have the extra 587 tensioner that's why.

there is 2 tensonors as stated above, a "early" build date one and then the rest.

only issue i had , on my build was using the later one (had a 97built bottom end) the timing covers from my Aug 94 build engine wouldnt work, I had to cut some of the inside of the bottom cover for the newer tensonor to fit. other then that, they bolt the same, do the same.

1G 6 Bolt - Build Date: 03/01/89 - 04/03/92
Part Number: MD 164533

1G 7 Bolt - Build Date: 05/01/92 - 05/01/94
Part number: MD308586

Early 2G 7 bolt - Build Date: 01/01/94 - 08/01/95
Part Number: MD308587

Late 2G 7 bolt - Build Date: 08/03/95 - 04/03/99
Part Number: MD308086

This should Help. The 3 digits on the tensioner are the last three digits of the part number, so you can use that to verify as well. Check your build date and that should clear it up. If it is close to the border of a build date and are not sure let me know your VIN and I can put it in caps and get you the Exact part number. This should clear things up for 98% of people.

Your orginal part number was MD185539 but that was superseeded by MD308587.
Build date 10.3.94

you can use the later 2g one you just have to trim the inner part of your lower timing belt cover or get a 97+ belt cover. Thats what i did. saved some money.

It's likely obvious but can you describe what you trimmed to use the later tensioner? I'm doing a repair and I'd rather not buy new 2gb covers for this 95 I have. The middle cover is broken (on purpose??) So I'm on the fence.

Here is what I've discovered. The early 2g lower cover is Part number MD193337. The later 2g cover is part number MD332865. They are interchangeable with one critical difference. The later cover has a small change to accommodate the later, larger hydraulic tensioner. As stated earlier in this thread the older cover has to be modified if used with a newer tensioner. Here are both covers with the change circled. You can see the part numbers also.
