alright, so I now know its possible to be successful with a high mileage car, if i get it compression tested, and looked over and the guy says theres nothing wrong with it...
why shouldn't i get it?

thanks for the replies!

There's absolutely no reason not to get it if you know the cars history. I'd take a well-maintained 150K car over a 30K car that gets driven into walmart for an oil change if the owner remembers any day.

My '90 has 175K on it, works great, hell my old Lumina had 250K on it when I sold it, still ran like new. If it's been taken car of, mileage isn't that important.

Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful.
This is where I stand: Keep looking, but I NEED a car by december, so I might fall back on the high mileage car if I can't find anything else.

Thanks a lot - will keep my eyes out!

im at 124k miles on my motor in my 2g. car is running low 11's. being raced just about every weekend, i have no real problems so these motors are strong. :thumb:

I'd say keep looking too. I just picked up a 98GSX, 60k, for $8400, all maintenace performed with records and I talked to the previous owner about everything. You can definitely do better... it just takes time which I realize you don't have much of but keep your eye out and ask lots of questions. It took me 4 months to find mine, worth the wait when you get it.

Good luck!

a gst spyder with 100k will wholesale at 9500$. that means a dealer will buy the car from you if you were to ever trade it in for about 7000. if you get it for 6800 you are NOT in the hole whatsoever. i got mine for 7500 with 50k and it wholesaled for 10,000$(checked cause i was gonna tell the insurance to total it, but i found i wasnt even close to the total mark).

a gst spyder for 6800 is a great deal. people say you can get things cheaper but really you cant. there are GS eclipses that are crappy with 120k+ selling for 11,000 where i live. hell even a non working pos white 96 GSX 5spd was selling for 10,5, NON WORKING. and somebody bought it.

does the turbo kinda go bad after a while....like 100k or do they work just like normal?

This goes back to the history of the car, 90k on my gsx and everything is perfect. No matter what though , do timing belt atleast every 60k :thumb: , but on the spyder, i dont know if their allowed at the track or not, but look into a gsx or tsi, even a 1g, that is if your going to buy "go fast" parts, i dont know your goals though.

I dont think I need to race, I jsut want a hobby. I'm in love with the cars, and they're fun to tinker with. I have a lot to learn, but once I have one to #### around with, I'll be learning right quick.
Like I say, I dont plan to race it, but I do want to do i/h/e, fmic, boost guage, new turbo, new pimp looking guages...nothing too serious.
I take reliability over pure performance anyday. no need for this spray crap people buy or the rediculous wings. Honda boys can spend on that gear.
I just want a fun toy!...that will get me to school.

you can find a better deal not saying the one you got is bad but you could find a better one, maybe even get a 1g they are very nice cars and are more performace based then a 2g (part wise that is)

I would trade my 12 second 1g for a nice 2g spyder anyday.

lots of input flowing through this thread, definitely likin' it.

whats your guy's opinion on spyders anyways? I think they look well less sexy than a hard top, but I just keep telling myself it'll be better for the summer. I'm going to view a spyder on the weekend, 88k, 8grand asking price.

Not trying to get you away from the whole convertable thing, but have you ever own one ? I dont care who tells you theirs dont leak, they do, trust me, we redo old convertables all the time at our shop, what a hassle, and people who go buy brand new mustangs with convertables come to us asking how to make it stop leaking. id love to have a convertable myself, but i cant afford to have a summer/dry use only car, but again, get what you want, i just want you to know before you go blow g's on a car

That is 100% true. My friend's honda del sol with a removeable hard top, it leaks like a bi***......hell....even my 95 talon leak a little bit from the window, when i wash the car with pressure wash....

yea , our side windows suck for car washs, i put vertical doors on my nt and it leaks like no tomorrow , iv fairly well got my gsx water tight(guy wrecked it before me, and bodyshop did sucky work fixing quarter panel) , it has a sunroof , but they usually dont cause much problems until they are old or or vechile been in a wreck

i have a spyder and yes it does leak once in a while when water hits and enters from the right spot.
i think the price is just about right for that car.

Yeah, I heard they leak, but the high mileage car i was talking about just had the roof replaced like a week ago..so its porbblay not sooo bad. As for the newer, lowerer mileage car I plan to check out this weekend..not sure. And also Del Sol's, the earlier ones, pre-1997 were more prone to roof leaks and vibration from the lid/roof.

hey GSX0TIC, i dont know if you tried to fix it or not , but pull out the headliner, and check for mineral trails to the source, and have someone spray with water hose while your in it, then take it to the car wash and do same, it shouldnt poor in so u will need a flashlight and look very closely and go from there :thumb:

a had a leak on my old TransAm's t-tops...founf the location and ran a bead of jb weld over it then smoothed it down with a putty knife, worked like a charm

Okay, I know the thread title is a bit misleading. What I really want to know is >>>>>

How many DSMers out there have approx 150k miles or more on an original engine with external modifications?

In other words, for all of us high-mileage guys with more power than the DSM engineerings had in mind for us (16Gs, FMICs, big injectors and other mods) how long are your engines lasting? There have been countless "Who has the most miles on their DSM" threads, but the high mileage winner's car may be stock and/or might be on the 3rd engine to reach 999,999 miles!

We had a recent poll asking about when people's engines needed to be rebuilt and there were plenty of nasty stories (http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=158557) but that doen't mean there are thousands of cars out there with many miles on stock original engines!

Gentlemen, start your posting :dsm: :talon: :laser: :thumb:
