I am looking to get DSM Link V3 for my 97 GSX. I was just looking for some advice and feedback being new to the scene. I was curious as to approx cost of complete package and what all do I need or need to do? Any feedback on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

So all I need is the link? Just buy that and I am all set? I wont need anything else? I have seen people talking about eprom's and flashing? Or dont I need to flash anything because I have a 1997? Didnt know what that was all about.... Thanks for the feedback so far :thumb:

I have a 97 and needed it socketed. You probably will too. Total cost: just over 700 if i remember correctly. They also inspect the ecu and replace worn caps if necessary. Very fast turnaround. Best money you can spend.

I think you're confusing ECMLink and what it actually is, I'm going to try to clear a few things up for you. First things first, you need to figure out which ECU you want to run and what works better for you. Since you've got a '97 DSM you need to read this link, then read it again and again until it makes sense to you.

Use ECMLink in a '97 DSM

Once you've decided which route you want to take, find a '95 EPROM ECU or convert your '97 to an EPROM, then you need to decide which version of ECMLink is best for your goals. Here's a link which compares the two versions of ECMLink v3 and their capabilities, just FYI the two versions are ECMLink v3lite and v3. v3lite is a few hundred dollars cheaper than the full version (v3) yet it's still VERY capable of tuning a DSM to decent power levels.

Compare v3lite and v3

The good news is, if you do decide you need the full version, you can just pay the difference between v3lite and v3 in the future.

ECMLink v3 is basically a microchip (which is installed on your stock ECU) and a cable that runs from you ODBII port to a USB on a laptop. If you don't have a laptop then that's one more thing you should budget into your plans so you can run Link.

dsm link will work with stock its a good first upgrade, and it works with anything. i run Speed density and bar3 with wide band. DSMlink is like a perma orgy for your car. and inless you plan on going all out and getting dyno's and what not then you dont need the full version you can get the light for now, then upgrade later when you decide to get a dyno.

the full version only has like 2 things that the light doesnt have and like i said its for dyno stuff.
That isn't true and I suggest you read (and compare) the info that's linked in my post above which shows the differences between the two. I also recommend reading and taking on-board our sites grammar/spelling/punctuation policies that don't allow text language "lingo"; I'd hate to have to give YOU
(not U) a warning for it.

Ya Sorry bud, i have goten 5 warning already, forgot you have to be expert in english class to give your opinion or help people on these forums. Makes it hard for us ilitterate people to be of some help.

You're not much help giving bad information, which you did above, and you type bad info up like my 11 year old sister sends text messages. :applause:

Indeed, the grammar and especially punctuation policies are STRICTLY enforced on this site. Look around and you can find posts with BANNED underneath. Just dot your "i's" and cross your "t's" LOL. No, i mean literally bro!
As far as your info, i believe the mod was right: there are more than just a couple differences between full and lite versions of link. Dyno stuff and a few other things. I personally went full version right off the bat, but i cant knock lite, it'll do a TON for you.

This makes no sense to me. I'm genuinely curious as to why you must have V3 full to run/tune on a dyno. Especially since I've seen cars tuned with nothing more than an air/fuel controller, a boost controller, and the dyno shops wideband tailpipe probe.

Like you I'm getting back into the modified car scene after 10 years and the technology has changed. DSM link was developed for DSM's to replace things like the Apexi AFC and other piggy back systems which have limits to them (ex. not removing the fuel cut or only adjusting injector pulse in 500 rpm sections). Yes you can just use fuel controllers and you can make power but DSM link allows you to adjust everything and easy to change things with drop down menus it works with every sensor, not take the signal change it or fake it. DSM link when installed and setup right will be easier and more reliable with your idle rock steady with any injector size or bolt on or engine work. Everyday drivability and huge HP work together, and gives you many ways to setup your car (speed density or GM MAF, etc..) The computer will work faster thus car runs better. I'm in the middle of installing a DSM link v3 which replaces the Apexi AFC. A decade ago when I bought the AFC thats all that was there (old Technology). I have been told by changing to DSM link and other small changes will squeeze more hp with the same setup, not to mention more reliable. I'll update you all when it's done, this week it goes on the dyno at Magnus performance. the next question is whether v3 or v3 light and that depends on what you want it for street or street strip or strip? You can install yourself, but I got Magnus to install it and tune, but I will be there and be participating to learn it's capabilities and how to data log. I recommend full version when ever you cheap out it always ends costing more.

Here is a page on there differences of V3 and Lite prodcompare [ECMTuning - wiki] Just go with V3 if money is good as once you get it, its done and over with and no more worring about it. If money is tight, you can buy the V3 Lite, but upgrading down the road will cost you only 125 dollars, plus shipping and down time, If you have it. So in the end it your call.

Wait you upgraded from v3 lite to full for only 5 dollars!!! Damn i want a refund i paid more than 100! Lol

+1 on best investment. I thought it was cheaper in my case to get an ecu from 1995 eagle talon and get that one chipped than trying to do something with a 98 ecu wich you can't unless you get it flashed .
I also went full first time I thought I might eventually go full so why not now not huge price difference and you can do so much.
