Just to be fair to the AEM, the long cranking time with the EVOs can be fixed. Or at least cut down so close to stock that I didn't even notice it anymore. I daily drove the EVO on the AEM for a couple years so I had time to sort everything out. It's a LOT of work. You really have to enjoy the process as much as the end result or it's just not going to be worth it for you.

Yea, that's all easily set in the primer map and the post start enrichment maps... and if dead cold....use coolant and air temp maps and you can dial it in where it never effects your "up to temp" tune

DO your home work on that one, cheap they are, they are also good. But as for somparing to the features of a full stand alone, you may have comparable features but not ones that can be dialed in or be as versatile... Even SDSEFI ( which no ne knows about ) is leaps above megaquirt (except their software, tbut he pitch is "no laptop)

MSnS also has problems with keeping a consistant AFR (at least the last models i put in did) We had to change to an autronic SM-2 on the alpha rameo track car to keep a consistant AFR safe enough to run road course racing and not blow up.... Anyone and about any box can be tuned for drag racing ..it's idle..enough driveability to get to the line and back from teh shut downj. But other than that you only need to setup wide open throttle ...tuning a road race car is so much more involved and complex....hell tuning is still the biggest tuning issues on a DD car with big injectors without cams.. the cams help balance out the big injectors not liking to open short peroiods by alowing more airflow and fuel flow at idle....okay im rambling..later for that

Megasquirt is nice, but engineered by people in their spare time(very smart people none the less). But aftermarket EMS companies have some of the brightest engineers in theworld at their business's

The one thing i'll give the MSnS is that it has 420 trigger setups in it factory (if ordered) i would love to know the trigger pattern on this motor just for future reference if i get the next better haltech adn swap from MSnS on her car to the old haltech from my car.

Anyone with that info i'll make it worth you while to give me the info on setting up a 420 triggering system to get it working (i haven't tried to much, i just made a trigger wheel, but would prefer factory trigers as they are more reliable) I'll trade stand alone install setup info for anythign from a honda, commodor, lexus, nissan, toyota, buick GN, trans am,and any GM hei and about any other thing you'd want to hook a stand alone too. I just haven't had the time to setup my test bed, a spare ECU and time away fromthe woman to get the 420 figured out, so i'd love some help.

Have you used ms2? Very very stable afr with that system. Idle afr is spot on every rev, every time you come to a stop, and every pull. Ms2 is far far better than 1 with a lot of the features that people made for 1, but better.

Btw M.S. powers most of the cars that win the pump gas drag race series, and also powers some of the fastest salt flat cars. I think the biggest problem was the low injector resolution, which was fixed with a different set of code, and is all gone with ms2. It always made my idle afr move a little more than I would have liked, but never anything crazy.

Also it is a full stand alone :shhh:;) :thumb::p

Setting these up, in my experience, is by far the hardest part about tuning a street car. Still having issues getting it all right, because you really only have one shot to do it each time you drive it. And with a DSM it takes forever to cool because the block retains so much heat :(.

He is right though, if you find it worth it (aka you don't like driving a pos) then it is totally worth the headache and trouble to tweak and fix.:thumb:

MS2 is a good ecu if i was going to build a car from the ground up and was going to make my own wiring harness and everything else i would look at it. But i really don't want to cut and wire the car to make the ecu work. If i sell the car i might want to put it back to stock and not have wiring problems.

I think both are good ECU's I am a little torn on which to use but it still comes back to EMS has more backing in the DSM/EVO world for a speed density system that is plug and play.

If i knew someone that could sell me a plug and play mega squirt system with bas cal's for my setup that i could tune with a wide band from there i would look harder into it. But to me doing the extra work for the MS2 is not worth the cost difference.

It could be as simple as buying a patch harness or finding a blown ecu. I know a few people who have used the connector on the stock ecu to run m.s. by cutting it out of the ecu and wiring it for plug and play. My girlfriends car will just be a patch harness hook up. Cut the wires that I don't want to feed to the ecu, and then use the others to run to the megasquirt. I too am concerned about selling the car later, though I am hoping that by the time she sells it(if), m.s. will have caught on more. :thumb:

p.s. (this is a joke) You must really hate doing work, to offset almost $1000 difference ROFL

I thought about doing the patch cable because i have a blown ecu right now that is why the car is not running and the ECU is not eprom so it is not really worth much.

As for the 1400 dollar vs 500 dollar difference i think that if i sell the car i can get my money back from the AEM ECU.

Resale is still pretty good on the ecu.

I think mega squirt would fit better if someone made a turn key package like they do for a FPR setup for a DSM.

It would include all the parts to get started.

1. Full put together ECU for a DSM(option to put together if you want)
2. Full boost control
3. Speed density setup
4. Wiring harness like the honda Swap guys get.
5. Base cals to get the car up and running. After a spec list was given.

Then I think you would be getting closer to apples to apples comparison with AEM EMS.

I wired my haltech using a spare ecu for plugs to go in the stock wiring, i think i said that already though. and Haltech does have DSm sensor plug patch looms , it's just not for eclipse, it's just 4g63 motor and sensors.... 2 maps, switchable on the fly with out a laptop = pump gas and E85 capabilities at teh flip of a switch Haltech E6x FTMFW!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't talk them up because i have one, i talk them up because for price and features you can't beat it. That and the link system ECU is really good too

here's a link to link LOL..i think they have plug inpackages for DSM and they do work with the DSM and other knock sensors, fully adjustable on sensitivity too!

It is funny to talk about link systems around other dsmers. Most assume that you are talking about DSMlink :p

I haven't used haltech though. I would love to try, I always enjoy learning. My post was a serious question, and not a question of your abilities or a cheap shot at your experience. Just saying that if you haven't used ms2, I would suggest it if you get the opportunity.

The linkg3 plus looks cool i did not see a price but looks like the AEM from what i could see. Does anyone on this board use this setup or not?

Picking up a used EMS for 800-$1000 is really not out of the question, sometimes even including sensors.

I like to play around and tweak stuff. There is also so much to read and learn with it. Almost infinite settings and adjustments. Integrated boost control is pretty darn cool too.

Words really can't describe how great an EMS setup is.

If you're up for a used EMS, look for a hlatech e6k or e6s, even an e6x ( all now no longer in production ) but they are great ECUs, not only are they just as good as any AEM with allt the same options ( IMO better) but also simpler to use and tune ( or at least to be able to understand what you're looking at)

I run an E6k and will take that and my J&S knock safegurad to any other car i buy until they no longer work. Neither can be had in the models i hold any more ( except by special order) but in my mind they are teh keys to every bit of performance my car puts out. YOU take charge with a stand alone EMS (EMS is a term that means engine mangament system, not just a product by AEm...some people don't know this)

Plus by using DOS bases software they are so much easier to tune not having to use a mouse to nvigate (especially when tuning alone0 is the best... I can't tune an AEM EMS by myself while driving unless i stop....almost ANY DOS based system i cna tune one handed while smoking a Parliament and using my turn signal to nagotiate traffic :D
