After having problems of when I shut the door and the interior lights would not go off, I removed both switches, cleaned all contacts and reinstalled them. I then tested both doors to make sure interior lights go on/off opening + closing doors many times and everything is good. The problem is once I start driving the car or even with car parked and ignition off the interior lights pop back on for no explainable reason. So I repeated the removal , checking, and cleaning contacts on switches and again everything will operate good for 10x's or so of testing but then lights either come on with door shut or they don't come on when door is open.

After looking at electrical diagram I suspect a faulty dimmer switch but has anyone else had a bad one cause this? Or do these simple door switches go bad because I thought it would be a matter of just cleaning the contacts?

Got a 2G and even after cleaning the door switch contacts, the interior lights didn't always come on. Had to replace the door switches. Problems solved.

If by some chance the new switches don't sure the problem, then you have the ground wire touching metal somewhere in the harness on its way to the switches (lights stay on), or a cut wire in the harness on its way to the switches (lights won't go on).

I had a problem like that with my driver side door switch. The ground wire was touching bare metal after the switch was installed. I put tape over the connection to stop the contact.
