there was a thread about this once asking how many people have ever broken a doorhandle. it probaly set a record for longest thread. Seemed like EVERY FRIEKEN DSM'er had at least one handle break on there 2g. Some talked about 3 or 4 handles break on them. Scary for me considering mine hasn't yet (knocks on wood).

What? It doesn't hold the door. It just works the latch on the door. Your hand is what breaks the handle, from yanking on it too hard or against its stops. To keep your door handle alive, use it to pop the door open, then open the door with your fingers on the edge of the door instead of the handle.

Oh, and metal door handles are made of pot metal, injection-molded zinc alloys. The plastics are stronger.

What gets me is that my 13 year old 180k mile MR2 has never broken a handle, and I've never heard of any other MR2 owners breaking door handles. Ditto for many other types of cars. What kind of cheap plastic did Mitsu use on the DSMs?

Well, thanks for the bad news.

Does anyone know where to get those little plastic things that hold the panels on? I need some of those and those plastic things that also hold on the moulding along the door too. The 'universal' ones from autozone don't work. Do I have to go to Satan?

Thanks.

has anyone tried to glue it back together....?? Mine broke today and I don't really want to have to get the new hadle repainted and all that hassle for such a small piece. Thanks in advance.

That thread on replacing it is very helpful. I fixed mine, but it was a bi***. Good luck.

I tried fixing mine twice with two different types of 2 part epoxies. The handle would last for a open or two and then break again. Finally replaced the damn thing.

Those little white clips like the link shows are the ones that I used to remount my exterior side panel on my 2g. I bought them from the dealer, but they look just like that... Good luck...

Like many people have experienced, I am currently experiencing a stupid door handle problem. I just got my 97 eclipse two weeks ago, and already it is annoying as hell. As of now, both handles are not broken off (thank goodness) but whenever i try to open either the passenger or drivers door, the door doesn't open, it takes a couple of tries (if i'm lucky) and a little finesse before the door latch lets go and the door opens.

I am wondering what other people have done to fix this problem since the door handles are not actually broken. I have even thought of getting a shaved door handle kit installed without shaving the door handles as a solution for now. Eventually I want to get the handles shaved, but I don't exactly got the cash flow to do it now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar problem, and all it took to fix mine was a little lubricant on the door latch. Don't know if it will work for you, but its cheap so its worth a shot. Good Luck.

I didn't open the door panel to lube the latch, i just shot some on the latch on the side of the door with the latch engaged, and it seemed to help. Now, instead of several tries to get the door open, it usually opens in a couple tries. As for the passenger's door, it actually opens now, before i could try twenty times, and it wouldn't open, so i guess the lube trick helps. The lube soaked in overnight, so we'll see, maybe the results are even better.

Thanks

yeah 2G's have cheap door handles that break off. you could shave them :D a littlte more work than you might wanna get into but its an option.

aluminum door handles? Would any body be interested in some? My da#%#&m door handles on my car keep braking! They are so cheep, thin plastic crap. I have been thinking of CNC out some for my car. They would be a direct replacement for the handle. So you do not have to go out and by the hole unit. tell me what you think

Mark

Stop using the handle to pull the door open. Open the latch with the handle, and pull on the sheetmetal.

Interesting idea, but I wonder if you can make them cheap enough to bother with.

I can’t remember what I paid for my last door handle like $70 I think. but then I had to get is panted (more cash), I think I can make a set for $75 with new hard ware so you can replace the pins and all (like a up grade )

Seems i have a few things to fix on my car. My CV joint is messed up makes a nice hard knocking sound when i start moving. My question is the Exterior driver door handle... it seems that the handle wont work. Interior handle works the outside does not. I lift up and it feels normal like the rod is connected but nothing is happening as far as opening up the latch. Guess its time to take the door apart.. sigh.. I hope its not as a pain in the ass as my RX7. If this has happened before to anyone let me know so i can fix it easier.

The only thing I know of that would do this, other than the handle being broken inside the door, is the rod not being connected. Take panel off, put the rod in, test numerous times to make sure you have it connected correctly before you put the panel back on. Make sure the small rod is in too (for the lock). It was a pain in the ass for me to do, but I don't have much patience and it was my first time dealing with door handles. But now all my door handles work :thumb:

Ok, last night i went to my car to throw some stuff in it and i forgot that i had locked it. So i pulled and with a combination of 40 degree weather and a little extra force, the door handle snapped off and i was holding it in my hand. Now, it took me a second to process what had just happened due to i had a few in me.... but, when i did realize it and i said was "ya gotta be kidding me". I understand that the 2g door handles dont last very long but shit, the car's only 6 years old... There's probably no way of fixing this eh? I guess i may have to buy a new one and get the damn thing painted... either way its the biggest pain in the ass opening the door from the passanger side EVERY TIME you want to drive the vehicle. LOL i still cant believe that happened.
Thanks
