Chilliwack,
so the time has come that my stock bov will not hold enough boost anymore. And I do not want to replace it.

I see 2 options.

1.) crush it.

2.) add the port like the guy at the Dodge Garage does. http://www.thedodgegarage.com/turbo_bov_mod.html

what are your thoughts on this??

As we don't/can't vent our bov, maybe we don't need the fast release and could just drill the hole and plug the one inside??

any ideas/experiences??

My crushed 1G BOV doesn't hold pressure at high boost. I'd like to do the "Gus" mod to the BOV, but I'm concerned that the BOV won't release pressure quickly enough to prevent damage to the turbo during racing. The diaphragm on the stock BOV sees boost pressure from the bottom and spring pressure plus intake manifold pressure from the top. The mod vents and thereby removes the pressure from the bottom of the diaphragm.

Obviously, the engineers put the boost pressure on the bottom of the diaphragm to make it open faster and sooner. With this feature removed will it still work well enough to be a reliable saftey valve? I'd like to hear from someone who has actual experience with this - not guessers.

Also, is the mod better left to uncrushed BOVs? I have one crushed and one uncrushed to try this on. There are a thousand threads on BOVs but I haven't found the answer to this yet...

I know of a lot of guys who did the dodge garage mod with success. In a racing situation it doens't matter if you even have a BOV. When I'm at the track I tighten my bov right down so it doens't open as I barely lift off the gas anyways when I shift and I don't want pressure being releived because i back slightly off the gas. If your only doing a bit of drag racing you won't end up with any damage to your turbo from having a bov that doens't open. During normal driving and over a long term not having a bov will be a problem, but racing generally will be less than 5% of what you do with the car overall so the percentage is very low, nothing to worry about.

The dodge garage has been doing stuff like that for years and they are a pretty smart bunch so I would have to go along with what they say.

The problem is that racing is 100% of what this car is used for. It gets trailered. On my Turbo T-Bird I had an automatic trans and no BOV. The turbo shaft broke on about the fourth run. No problems after I put on a BOV. On all these cars, the throttle generally gets snapped shut at the end of a run.

It gets snapped shut at the end of the run if you let off the gas hard, just ease off the throttle until your back into vac then let off the gas, that is all I do. Regardless if you use the car strictly for racing then the dodge garage mod will work for you, or you can just buy a different BOV with more control.

tryed a similar mod to my stock 1g bov, and it fluttered real bad and blew off my lower IC pipe twice. i put mine back to stock but it won't hold more than 18 psi at redline. I might try to crush it slightly. My mod was reversable, but still have the problem that i orriginaly wanted to fix :(

Dejon Tool came up with a fix called the Leak Stop Kit. It's basically the same as the dodge garage mod, except it's hooked up to a pressure sensing switch that switches at 15 psi. Above 15 psi it works just like a modded BOV, but when you're hitting lower boost, like when you drive around town, it works like an unmodded BOV and saves the turbo and throttle plate from damage.

I have one. I like it.

So if a guy is using the car for racing only, just venting the fitting to atmosphere like in the dodgegarage mod is the way to go? I assume this wouldn't release as quickly as an unmodified bov but would be less damaging than no bov at all...

Am I right?

Yup. Like the guy up there ^ said, don't close the throttle too quickly with that mod. If you do, your BOV won't make any cool noises like Phsssst, instead it will go "CLANK!"

i know there are a lot of threads about this but hear me out. the dodge garage mod is pretty much closing off the stock refrence port on the bottom of the bov then relocating it so it can use the atmosphere 0 psi which will keep the valve from opening prematurely. if a boost refrence is connected to the new port it will pretty much be back to stock and be known as "Fast releasing"

the dodge garage site is here http://www.thedodgegarage.com/turbo_bov_mod.html

i was wondering with the new boost refrence line being 0 psi and using the "slow releasing" will this in anyway cause harm to the turbo? i mean we all hear talk about which bov opens faster and stuff will the slower opening cause any damage to the turbo?

I bought Dejon Tools 1G BOV mod kit which uses the same idea, but has a pressure controlled solenoid to swith from 0 leak mode to fast releasing at 15 psi. It cost 50 bucks and works great.

are you recxirculating the 1g? cause im currently runnin the 0 leak mode with no recirc and im knocking more than ever i knocked 0 with my hks so i think im either sucking in mad air or something

I did the dodge garage mod awhile back. It worked as described but I got all sorts of compressor surge on decel. Wouldn't be worth a turbo at least. I just ran a hose from it back to the IC pipes. I can take it off if i want then for races or whatever. Overall though its a really good mod as long as you dont get surge.

I'm glad this question was posted. I have been looking into the same thing.
From what it sounds like, it's not what I want to risk.

Not trying to jack your thread(I think we're looking for the same answers) but does anyone know the propper way to crush a BOV(or a site that explains it)?
I know the basic way but I want to do it right before this 50trim goes on.
Thanks

hmmm well today i turned my mbc to the 18 psi mode i have dual stage and with my smal l16g i had it at 16 so i set it at 18 and i floor it after about .6 bar it stops boosting i think this is casue of the bov leaking but i have the leak stop kit from dejon tool so im gonna try that tomorrow

crusching it is no better - it still slows down the response time of the bov

get the stop leak kit!

Why don't you just consider getting a different bov?
My 1g stock bov is fine for me and I've had no problems with it up till 18psi. I say just get another one if you want to run that high of boost.

Consider greddy or a hks? Possibly a tial?

well, the 1g bov with stop leak kit responds faster than basically all other bovs

hmm its kinda weird im running the 1g bov with the mod and with the leak stop kit, but i still stall. i think its due to my injectors but i was hoping the recircing would fix it. I Have a HKS, which i am selling with a 1g adapter, but i figured i could save money and sell the hks, another option was to recirc the hks. i know the tial is a popular one but why? it doesn't recirc and its such a large valve all the air gets let out quite quickly so im not sure why even the damn fast dsm use tial instead of recircing

I have a few questions about the dodgegarage bov mod (drilling holes, tapping them, set screw). I dont really understand this "fast release" thing, is that the stock setup? Then what is the BOV mod setup, slow release?

heres the site and the segment I dont understand:

http://www.thedodgegarage.com/turbo_bov_mod.html

"If you did your job correctly this is how the valve should look like- now pressure from the upper intercooler line cannot reach the lower port in the BOV.# Installed on the Daytona with the new port open to atmospheric pressure this valve has held without leaking at 30 psi! And the best part is if I want the BOV to be "quick releasing" again (that's the whole point of having that port in the base of the valve from the factory) its a simple matter of running a vacuum line from the turbochargers outlet nipple to the new port and viola'. "

and...

"..you could just leave the port open to outside air but you loose the fast release feature which is fun for scaring the hell out of honda drivers# ;-) "

Hmm. Are there any other mods you can do besides crushing and cutting the top off and adding spacers? I thought 1g bov's are good? :thumbdown

The mod shown on that page is in theory very sound. I have not done it and can not speak of its value in use.

If you insist on making too much pressure for the stock valve to hold this is a much much better way to increase the pressure holding capacity of the bov. I do think he goes a bit overboard with the taps and such but hey no problem.

What wouldnt be overkill? Not using taps? Or just drilling that hole and not adding any tube.

Also why wouldnt it be good for the street? No BOV noise to scare honda drivers (which is good IMO, my car is a sleeper and should stay one)?
