I've got a '90 Talon. Guy I bought it from said the tranny had been rebuilt. Under normal driving I can get into 2nd 90% of the time, no prob. When I nail it from a light get up around 6500 rpm and with clutch to the floor and very deliberate shift I GRIND:mad: !!

Checked engagement point of clutch - adjusted with no change.

Tranny rebuild? Could the transfer case be causing any of this?

If I rebuild should I install the "double synchro 2nd gear kit" from TRE seen here
http://www.teamrip.com/awd.html

Your synchros are probably messed up. I mean come on, it is a 16 year old car. Most 1g's will grind into 2nd if you slam it in there. Try shifting slowly and let the gear "catch" itself and it most likely won't grind then. You may also wanna try searching. I guarantee you you'll find atleast 20 topics asking the same thing.

The above is correct, its more than likely synchro's. Just somethn you gotta deal with till you rebuild your tranny and get double synchros. Short of a rebuild, all you can do is launch, slam 2nd, and hope you dont miss.

And if you do this, you better hope you can afford a rebuild cause pretty soon you won't have a 2nd gear at all.

Might as well just toast it and rebuild. Nothin pisses me off more than missin 2nd after puttin my car through a launch

Thanks guys. Kinda figured it was synchros. Now what is the consensus on the TRE double synchro kit?

Is there a better place (guess I should say cheaper) to get the kit... or maybe another alternative?

Don't get just synchros, get a stage 1 rebuild with new 2,3, and 4, double synchros, ect. With awd you're gonna need it anyway, trust me.

A friend of mine was saying missing 2nd is a pretty common thing with cars with the 4g63, even the evos. Is this true? Because my 2g does it from time to time on a launch so seeing this thread, it has got me curious if it is.

yes, these cars are known for their 2nd gears problems. I havent seen a dsm other than the one i bought stock have a perfect 2nd gear.

When brand new, no car should ever grind into a gear if shifting correctly. The only reason your 2g grinds into gear is because it's old and has been abused going into 2nd gear in some way. Even when you buy a brand new car, let's say an '06 Evo, if you go into 2nd very hard and at high rpm's often, it will mess the gear up; especially on an awd car. My friend's 93 awd talon has a near perfect stock tranny ever since he bought it back in 95 because he shifts like an old granny.

Thanks for the responses. Though if we're assuming you are both correct all it is is driving habits that will mess up your 2nd, AND yet it seems to happen very often with 4g63s then the only logical conclusion would be that us 4g63 owners just plain beat the snot out of our cars more than your average driver...? I agree that if you baby the tranny it should hold out longer but if my friend and beerbaron are correct then it has to be some sort of inherant weakness in the transmission which is only exacerbated by age and driving habits, shouldn't it?

Ofcourse the way a transmission is built contributes to it's quality. The 4g63's transmission may be built more poorly than others but if driven like it should be since day one it shouldn't have a huge effect on it, but on the other hand, if you shift like a maniac, it will wear out the gears much quicker than a transmission that was built excellently. And yes, most dsm owners do beat the snot out of their cars more than your average driver. You have to consider how many times one has been at the track when you want your car to go all out. Also, when you have AWD, expect the life expectancy of your transmission to be much shorter than a rwd or fwd car if you shift like a maniac. Btw, did you just say masterbated?:p j/k (exacerbated reminds me of masterbated)

Also consider the type of driver who would purchase a dsm in the 1st place....
Def not a old lady, all car racers and enthusiasts who like to rape their cars with harsh driving habits... And yes it just so happens the tranny had a slight weak point and our driving habits amplifies that weak spot over time but it doesnt necessarily mean the trannys weak or anything... I know I like to shift into 2nd hard and trip out the tires a lot and at the same time Im paying the price for it because my 2nd sometimes is very rough going into gear and grinds harshly now days, yet when I first bout my car a year ago it was ok...
Also the shifter bushing flex too much when you change gears leading to the grinding noise, go to vfaq.com and look up the shifting info and it will tell you a mod to potientially take that grinding away. I havent gotten around to doing it myself though.

Ok yeah, that was what I was hinting at was if it had an inherant weakness in the design of the tranny. Yeah, mine was fine when i got it a year ago but um yeah, it's starting to act up. I have no idea why... really... :sneaky: Thanks for clearing that up and for the suggestion on cleaning that up. And yes. exacerbated is a fun word. Masticating is a fun one too. :D
