Hey wise folks,i have a question. I researched but couldn't find anything helpful.
Anyway,my question is,i am being sold a 96 fwd turbo tranny,i have a 1992 tsi,i know the 2g trannys are a little better, but i'd love to hear your opinions on this and please somebody tell me or point me in the right direction to find detailed differences in the different model year turbo trannys.

Any help is greatly appreaciated.

P.S. It's a really good price.:thumb: :talon:

I dont think your new tranny is going to work w/o a good bit of fabrication. I was contemplating this same idea but w/ awd and had a spare 2g tranny laying around. The mounting points are different, bellhousing is the same obviously but everything else if different. Your bet bet would most likely be to swap the guts from the 2g tranny into yours, not sure if this is possible on the fwd's tho. So with that aside either buy a tranny for a 1g or start tearing into yours.

Actually it's the opposite, the bell housing is the only physical difference aside from the shift lever. A 96' will drop right into a 1G while ignoring the front tranny mount on the 2G bell housing, it is trying to swap a 1G tranny into a 2G that requires extensive fabrication. You will however need to do the following.

1. Swap to the 2G slave cylinder as the 1G SC bleeder valve will be hidden behind the front tranny mount.

2. Much more difficult if even possible on older trannies, remove the roll pins and swap shift levers. The other option would be to dismentle(sp?) both trannies and swap shafts with the lever still attached.

Due to the difficulty level of #2, I strongly suggest that you find yourself a 91-94 tranny.

Well i appreaciate your advice, and the whole reason i asked was because the 1st talon i had(sold it and ironically goes to my same friend who deals in dsm's)broke the tranny and he bought a 98 rebuilt tranny cause according to my friend, the 97-99 trannies have all the upgrades, and it bolted right in with the exception of using the 1g differential and swapping to 2g starter backplate(the aluminum piece behind the flywheel).
And well i found mint 96 tranny at a great price and was thinking of swapping it in place of my tired fwd tranny.

If anyone knows where to find detailed info on the trannies it would be greatly appreaciated, and also oldman and the rest thank's for replying, you gotta love this community, none like it anywhere. :thumb:
