I need an exact answer i have searched and cannot come up with an answer. I have a 90 awd dsm and I need a transmission. I need to know if all 90 transmissions will fit in my gsx? I know the spline count is 21 (I think).

What exactly are you trying to get at since at first read you seem to be asking an obvious question.

Unless you want to swap transfer cases too, you'll need a 21 spline AWD transmission.

for a 1990 tranny too, mine is beginning to grind into 4th gear, it was manufactured in 1989 if that helps, or are all 1990 trannies the same? Also i have 4 bolts connecting my drive shaft to the transfer case, i have no history to my car, but shouldnt there only be 3 in the 90's? i know my 92 is a 6 bolt 4 bolt, but arent 90's supposed to be 6/3?

When people say 6/4 that means that there are 4 bolts holding the axle flange on. Look on vfaq under the 4 bolt swap write up.

I'm pretty sure that 1990 trannies are 22 spline. I don't think they ever made a 21. I could not find a good 22 spline tranny anywhere when I was looking so I swapped to the 23 spline from the late 91-94 models? The swap is relatively easy if you can't find a good 22. You will need the 23 spline T-case, 92 and up shifter base and the transmission.Others ahve had to swap the cables and trans brackets but I didn't have to. Just some food for thought in case you can't find a usable 22 spline.

Thank you for clarifying that for me, For the longest time i was confused, i know the the reason for the supposed advantage to the 4 bolt rear, but never knew how to tell short of measuring the rear axels, Also if i do swap out my 1990 tranny to one with a different transfer case, what other differences between 1990 and 91-94 will i experience, i have been told that the synchros in the 91+ are better quality, but aren't there wiring differences also? You have been very fast and helpful thusfar please continue :thumb:

I'm not sure about the syncros but the wiring was exactly the same for my swap. Everything just plugged right in.

Will a Galant VR4 tranny swap right into a 90?? I thought the spline count on a 90 was 22?? Steve said 21, and its hard as hell to say hes wrong in my mind. VR4 trannys are 22 as well right?
