interchangeable transmissions

I have a 1990 gsx and was wondering if any other transmissions would work in it.

I will first assume you have a 5-speed.

Essentially, any of the 1G AWD and G-VR4 transmissions will bolt up. A couple of things to keep in mind is the spline count from your output shaft going into your Transfer Case. The early 1G's had a short arm for the cable connections and others have a long arm. While the physical size between the two arms may not seem like much, having the wrong one could be the difference between the transmission properly engaging the gear vs not engaging or popping out. The 90GSX also has a different looking shift arm on the transmission.

These threads cover some things you will need to consider, but any '90-'99 AWD DSM transmission should work eventually with the right combination of parts.

I have an 99 gst and my tranny is going up, are there any other transmissions i could use to replace it such as a 2000-2003 eclipse??
