difference between these datalogge cable???

I have seen 2 different schamatics to make a datalogger cable but, what is the difference between them

the 1st one consist of: a 10k resistor, and 1n4007 diode

the 2nd one consist of: a 10k resistor, 1n4007 diode, max 232 chip,and a few other things
