I have seen that these 2 different model numbers floating around, and it seems that the VE is a "later" model than the CW.... anything different in these?

The VE is a VGT turbo, the CW is not. I don't know about the coldside (they may be the same) but the hotside is completely different. CW has a tiny HY35 sized hotside while the VE can go much smaller or much bigger, depending on what position it is in.

ah, I see now, many auctions on ebay are improperly labeled I think... here is the CW that you mentioned.

I wouldn't call the HY35 hotside "tiny" at 9cm^2. Smaller than the HX35 housings (10, 12, and 16 cm^2).
The VGT version reportedly has a hotside that varies from as small as 3 to 25 cm^2.

But unless you have some way to control the VGT electronics, (or you getto rig it), then I suggest you buy the non-VGT version.

As for coldsides, the HY35 came in several different "flavors", if you will. Some have a 90* elbow on the compressor housing, some don't.

I run a 12cm currently on my car, and I am looking to emulate my setup with a bigger compressor on a friends car with a similar setup.. i wouldnt run smaller than my 12cm, so I am going to continue looking for the VGT turbo, and rig it (rig is my middle name).

I know of 2 people on this forums using the VGT turbos and have pretty good things to report about them. I know one said hes seeing about 53 lbs/min with cams and an intake. I have one sitting at my house that I plan on using on my next dsm :). Apparently the compressor wheel measures clsoe to that of the 6 blad HX-40 and I think the turbine wheel is that of the HX-35 in a variable sized housing aka quick spool with excellent flow potential.
