How did the pressure plate leafs brake off? The clutch disk piece beat them out?

i dont know on the clutch forks?? it came apart like that. my car is running 25psi and i have been taking it easy. i searched on this problem and i guess that it is actally common on the awd people say they cant take the strain that the awd put on them. i wrote and set pics to act and they do not get to me so idk. i am just going to run the 2600 again with the unsprung 6puck and see what happens.

This time around, I ended up going with a Competition Clutch stage 5 with a sprung 4 puck disk. Engagement is positive with it, but not too harsh. As for longevity, I dont have a clue. Mine has less than 100 miles but all over 30psi and it works flawlessly. I would have went back with act but I dont want to have to replace clutches on a regular basis. My last ACT(old) went through 3 trannies, I hope this does too.

I thought it was always a good idea to stay off boost until 500 or so miles on a new clutch. I am getting my ACT 2600 replaced even as we speak. I got a sprung 6 puck to replace it. I know several people with sprung six puck clutches of various brands that work awesome on AWD.

Yes its a good idea to be easy on a new clutch for a length of time. But in reality you only need to be easy on the engagement. Once the clutch is fully engaged, a hard pull will not effect it.

Damn Keith, get a freaking TRE/Shep Trans already....:D

yea the act guy called me after seeing my pic of the disk in pieces. they told me that they have never seen that before. so they want me to send it in and they will send a complete kit back. now i was looking at my fandanza flywheel and where the clutch sets its not damaged at all. but the center has a few scraches is that bad? should i replace it? its not bad. and there is no major damage to the bellhousing just where the clutch fork is there is a tiny piece broken off but i can fab a piece in. i was thinking of trading in my street disk for a sprung 6puck is that a good idea..

right now i have a 95 talon with a built 6bolt running a big 16g at 25psi.
now i have in the shop is a shepardfab mani with a gt35r and plans are for 30psi.

Mine just popped a spring... has anyone had any success getting a replacement from ACT?

If not, then what clutch should I get? I'm done with ACT.

ACT is very easy to deal with. Take pics, send them to ACT. THey will give you an RMA number, send it back. If they see it is a defect they will send you a new kit.

Cool, good to know.

I take it you had a ACT failure and they replaced your kit easily?

I bought form JNZ, not ACT directly, that shouldn't matter right?

Yeah, I think I posted it in this thread somewhere too. The disc going around all the fingers on the p-plate broke. Talked to them on email, he said to send pics, sent pics, he gave me an RMA number and said they'll look at it, and then he sent out a whole new kit right away. Still have it sitting in my room because I bought another kit to get the car up quick. I bought mine from a shop in the area.

Has no one noticed that the clutch disk springs on a lot of failed ACT clutches are worn???

In some cases, but not all, I've noticed that the yellow spring on the disc have had their paint worn out. This leads me to believe that the PP fingers are contacting the disc springs.

See my thread here:
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/drivetrain-tech/351015-act-failed-help-diagnose-warranty-pics.html

In my case it looks like the clutch was not adjusted properly and the TOB pushed in too far causing the back side of the PP finger to contact the disc springs. Review the pics (including mine) and you'll notice the wear.

This could easily explain the clutch failures. At least for those that have worn springs.

Well just pick up a bulit GST spyder with a 8k mile old engine and tranny+Act 2100. Drove the car for 100 miles ( 4Days) and boom.I heard a knocking sound shut the car off an could not restart it right away. Pedal was super hard. Push it down enough to get it started but can not put it in gear.. An if I start it in gear there is a HORRIABLE scraping noise.( Once did that once for 2 secs). So car is a sleep now. :( all this happened while I was trying to get my inspection sticker Embarrasing.. Habe not taking it apart yet so know idea how bad it is. Only good this is a have a BNIB Slowboy racing 2100 with 3 qtrs of fluid sitting at the house just no $$ to pay for the install.

I've had two ACT 2600's and both have failed with under 10k miles.

First one broke a finger off the PP and got lodged b/t the PP and Disk

Second one broke a Spring in the disk and was lodged between the flywheel and Disk. Beat up all my flywheel bolts, so I got lucky...

No more ACT's for me, ever. I have a 0% success rate with them, it's funny that EVERY other car forum will not recommend ACT, since they have shitty craftsmanship and are overpriced, except for DSMtuners, we still recommend these POS Clutches. DSM guys go wet over ACT, and everyone else won't touch them w/ a 10ft pole!

Tom, is that an old-style pressure plate? I've been told that the old style pressure plates won't work properly with the new style (4 big spring) disks. A buddy of mine tried it and his PP fingers were hitting the springs causing disengaugement issues. That could also explain why the figers of the PP are breaking off.

I didn't know that there was more than one style of PP. I received a new PP (2100) from ACT... how can i check if it's new style or old style?

Can you post pics of the two so I can compare visually?

Thanks Paul,

Tom

I'll see what I can dig up.

I know for a fact the the wiseman, project_tsi, tried to use a old style 2900 PP with a new style 4-spring 6-puck disk, and he was never even able to make it out of the garage due to harsh disengagement issues. Upon disassembly, he learned that the PP fingers were heavily riding on the larger diameter spings in the 4-sping disk. He ended up running a clutchnet disk that has smaller springs that clear the PP fingers. I'll see if I can get him to chime in.

yeah...probably 200 miles after the rebuild. the clutch was brand new 200 miles previous to this:

Havent used an ACT disc though. Using a Competition Clutch carbon kevlar full face disc.
