hey i got a pda phone combo from a friend of mine im not using the phone part put i want to use the pda part as a data logger its on a palm os, will it work and if soo where would i get the data logging software and where would i get cables to plug it to the ecm on my 93 talon, it uses a hot sync docking station to my pc so its more or less programable..the phone is a samsung PCH1300 its old but the software is still avalable.

If it runs a Palm OS, you can likely run Palm 'n Stein on it. As for a logger cable, you'll need a serial docking cable for the PDA, just like any other Palm, and an ODBI cable with a serial end to match. It's a lot easier to just buy a Palm/Cable combo from eBay though.

sorry about that ill keep that in mind about bumping ok well it runns a palm os and it has a docking station for the pc, so i guess i just need the software and the cable to the obd conection

Please try to use proper sentence structure and keep the bold face to a minimum.

Yes, you will just need the cable to connect to the diagnostic port and Palm 'n Stein. Just load the program like you would any other on your Palm and hook it up to the car.

Search the boards or repost in this thread if you have any other questions.

well ive got the palm os on my pc, but i cant seem to get the palm n stien to instal or run on my pc.

ok i guess im totaly dumb on this sorry im really new at this! ok so how do i get the palm'n stien on my handheld? im sorry if i need to have my hand held threw this!.

Hotsync your palm to backup all your information and create the user menu.

Download this program and install it.
http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/win_desktop.html

Then run the program and click on the "Quick Install" icon on the left-hand sidebar. There it will give you an empty list and a click-down menu to select which user if you have multiple devices.
Click the "Add" button and find the files for Palm'nStein and whatever other programs you want to add. (I use palm'nstein and MMCd.)
Then close that little window and Hoysync that baby. It will automatically install those programs.

You will have to search the forums and play around with the device once you hook it up to really learn how it works. There is far too much for me to explain in this post ;)

ok i want to thank everyone for there help so far! and this is my progress as of now ive got the palm unlocked and syncing with my pc, and the palm n stien is loaded and seems to work ok. The problems im having now is that i cant find a cable that will plug into the phone, and too my talon, ive looked everywhere!!! and also i cant seem to get the tune n stien to run on my pc so i can review my logging, but of corse if i cant plug it in to the car that wont matter!!...any more info would be greatly helpfull!! and thanks agean for the help so far!!

What type of connection do you use to hotsync with your computer? Does that have a usb?
There is a USB to serial cable you can get to hook up the cable that they sell on ebay or at one of the various sites.

Here's a bunch of the converter cables from Fry's Electronics

You could also build your own, but that takes a good bit more finesse. These are just examples to get you looking around. Oh, and that first item at Fry's is not actually what you want ;)

ok sorry i will b alittle more specific the phone ,pda combo is a smsung and it is like 3 years old i cant find a cable ti plug into it that i can use as a data cable and it uses a syrial port to plug into the pc out of a docking station.

I don't know if the Samsung will work.

The standard cable for the 1g DSM is a serial cable on one end that plugs into the diagnostic port (three pins) near the fuse box under the far left-hand side of the dash. This is the cable that most places sell.

The one that I linked to above is actually electrical connectors that slip over the pins in that diagnostic port. If you can find an old serial cable and cut off one end, you can follow some of the directions on this pages.

ok i think im shure my samsung will work it runs the tune n stine program verry well and it uses a standerd serial db9 conector to hot sync, and i think i can make that cable my self but my question now is do i need those capasitors or resisters the other cables that show up on the link that was provided on the last post do not show any resisters or of the sort. if there not needed than im shure i can make it myself i have enough of that stuff lying around..?!

I think the resistor and diode are for bypassing the link, allowing a continuous connection as long as there is no palm connected.
Without them you will get an ABS light (if you have it) as long as the cable is plugged in and it might send an incorrect signal/overload the palm.

EDIT: Ok, cross that out. The below post is from the master.

The resistor and diode are to convert the signal levels from RS-232 to 0 to 12v and from two wire TX and RX to a single wire shared,

The circuit on the MMCd sourceforge site is an active signal converter and my schematic in the archive article a passive one. The passive interface depends on the serial port of the PDA or computer to do half of the conversion work by accepting 0v as a RS-232 mark level.
