Dash and console lights wont work with headlights on

I'll try to be as short as possible.I got a $355.00 speeding ticket which prompted me to get out my old radar detector.The only prob is cigarette lighter doesent work.The cord was frayed on detector so I baught a new on which I planned on wireing directly cause I figured lighter was just burnt out.When I pulled the wires to the lighter they were dead but the tiny little light still worked.I just touched a wire on the little bulb and it, along with dash lights went out.Ok I figured I blew a fuse and I did.The lighter fuse.So I replaced it but they still wouldnt come on.Maybe I had a rare defective fuse.No that one didnt work either.I have checked every fuse in the car but still no luck.The stereo light even goes off when I turn the headlights on.But still plays.Could it possibly be that the dimmer burnt out causing all lights it controlls not to work??Its either that or a burnt wire.Help!

hey man yea ur dimmer is dead. Thats what happened to mine. Instead of replacing the dimmer i just buy passed the dimmer switch witch was easy. Cuz i dont see the need for the dimmer. I just took a power from the lighter and hooked it to the back of the guages on one of the positive side of the little lights. Cuz when u turn on ur head light the ground is connected. So u wont alway have them on 24/7. They work like thier suppso just no dimmer action. Thats how i by passed mine when it burnt out.

I dont have power to my cigarette lighter.Dont know why,Never have.Cant I just unplug both wires running through the dimmer and tape them together?

Yup!it was the dimmer..10 minute bypass.Un-plug power socket on back of dimmer.Run a wire from center black wire on plug,to right green wire also on plug.Tape good.Done..Thanks!!

I tried the same thing you said damooch, all it did was blow my tail light fuse twice. Hmm..

Alright, I spliced the plain black wire, and the black wire with the yellow stripe togethere, and it worked.

How funny DSM have these similar problems, , i also seem to be going throug hthis problem.
If i follow this fix as posted above will this help my taillight fuse from blowing every time ?

Still haven't gotten this issue fixed. Anyone have an idea ? I don't want to rig something up to make it work, i want to fix it the right way.
