I don't know the size (I believe 12mm). Should be 10 studs

Ok thanks so it is the small sized ones that I need to remove I have never done the top end of a engine so this is pretty new to me LOL

I bought the wrong size yesterday I bought a set of standard size hex heads opppss. I guess I just added to my collection of tools LOL

The middle hex heads are kind of like water jackets I removed mine not knowing and the middle silver hexs do absolutely nothing! The black ones close to your valve stems and lifters are all you should worry about taking the head off.

I felt dumb when I took those loose and seen they are about a 1/2 thick.

Good luck!

Oh and you can use satandard on this car man. Standard will fit metric but metric will not fit standard to an extent.

12mm would be 1/2
14mm would be 9/16
17mm would be 11/16 I am pretty sure. I have used both on these cars.

The lower fasteners in the picture is what needs to be undone to get the head off. The ones in between the spark plug holes are just plugs in the head for oil or water galleys.

There's also no need for the timing marks to line up while removing the head. I would leave them as is until you get the head off to avoid making the valves contact the pistons.

You can not use standard. They may fit on the nut sometimes but they are not the same size. Unless you want to strip bolts. That's just bad advice.

Tell that to my torqued main caps 11/16 and rod caps 9/16.

Like I said before, I can work on my 1973 gran torino and cannot use metric. But I have tightened and loosened with standard on this car. I do not see how that's bad advice when it does work and has always worked for me LOL.
But im not a mechanic so what do I know. Im just a normal guy that knows you can use both. But its only the three mentions above that I know for sure.
Of course I do have a 3/8 & 10mm socket.l also. But what does a tool compaany know?

head studs are a 10mm allen...As for using standard on metric...it can be done but i do advise against it. I use standard sometimes when i misplace a socket or wrench and i get tired of looking for the f-in thing!

From the factory yes, the original poster has arp studs which will be require a 12 point socket.

Definitely have ARP's there, you need a 12 point 14mm socket to get them off. I'd suggest getting a deep-well as the shorties don't always grab them.
