I just bought a 95 talon Non turbo for 500 im only 16 so i dont know much and they said they timing belt broke so i looked under the hood and the belt was intact did it just shred teeth of the belt if so did it still bend the valves or is there a lower chance of that happening also if i need a new head i found one locally for 75 bucks he says its good i was wandering if there is any way to tell if the valves are bent when its out of the car

I heard if you have the head out of the car you can see if the valves are seated or not is that true also

Do a compression check. If your valves are bent, you will get either no or very bad compression.

If your timing belt is still intact, you shouldn't need another one just to test the compression.

Would i need to get a new timing belt to do one

I bought my last DSM the exact same way you did. I got it for $200.00 because the timing belt was shredded down at the crank gear... Awesome deal IMO! :thumb: $500.00 is not bad if your car is really clean and does not have many other things wrong with it (other than the T belt and Head work).

The Head that 'was' on my $200.00 car was toasted (bent valves). It sits outside now on a bucket waiting to be re-built when I get time. I replaced it and all is good. My Mitsu is happy again! :thumb:

You are likely in the same boat as I was and a compression test would be senseless IMHO... You got some bent valves and spinning the motor around some more is not going to make it any 'better' than it is now. You could make things worse.

This is a job that you can do if you try. And if you take your time and do it right, then your car is likely to be very reliable when you get finished! Best of luck and let us know if we can help out any. :dsm:

Compression tests aren't supposed to fix things and they don't make things worse, they're just supposed to let you know if all of your vavles are sealing correctly, which in his case most likely not. I have heard of instances in which the belt has broken or jumped a tooth and nothing got messed up, but this is rare, and you have to get pretty lucky. Since you asked how to check if the valves are bent, compression test is the easisest way. What I would do is just go ahead and rebuild/replace the head and get a new timing belt regardless, your car will only run better and be more reliable.

I looked closer at the belt and all teeth are intact and in good shape also there is no slack in the belt the person said the check engine light came on before the car stopped running?? so im going to do a compression test what should it read?

2g NT 420A
Standard Compression: 170-225 psi
Service Limit: 100 psi

It almost sounds as if the person that sold you the car doesn't really know if the belt broke or not, they're just assuming it did? If this is true, a compression test would be very important, that way, you can tell if the valves did ever get messed up.

thanks it has 170k on it so maybe 130-160psi... the check engine light came on so it might be something simple i ordered a chrysler service manual for the Eagle Talon to diagnose the engine code

Yeah, you definitely won't have perfect compression with that many miles. Reading the engine code is also very important, after that and a compression test, you should basically be good to go on fixing the problem. Let me know how it goes and if you need anything else.

Well this weekend i put a new battery in it a spun the motor over on quick time and there was not compression at all sounded like a motor with all the plugs out so it would have been pointless to do compression the engine light was not on... so i pulled the head off took about six hours it took about 1 1/2 to figure out how to get the bracket of the left side of the intake that was connected to a vacum box stupid thing i pulled the head off set it down and there was no question i had some bent intake and exaust valves also how hard is it to put in time do you think me and my dad could do it he has alot of mechanical experince

I just found totaled 99 eclipse gs for 800 good engine and tranny.. so i think im gonna swap its motor and tranny out for mine
