I just sprung a leak on my driver's side axle seal. I bought a new seal. I'm going to do this tomorrow. I've never done a seal yet and while looking at the seal I noticed one side has a tiny metal coil going all around the inside of it. Which side points into the tranny and which side points towards the axle?

The spring goes into the tranny. There is a sorta flap that goes outside. The best way to take the seal out is with a prybar and the best way to get it back in is by using the old seal as a driver and using a hammer to tap it into place. Just make sure to tap it all the away around and not just in one place.
Good luck.

Should be able to easily figure out which side is which, once you take a look at the old seal. I usually put a thin layer of oil around the the outer edge of the new seal, so it slides in nicer. I usually just find a correct sized socket to tap the seal in with. Also put a thin layer of oil on the inside of the seal before you slide the shaft back in (less chane of doing damage & causing another leak)

I just wanted to know how it goes in in advance. I was planning on loading the seal up with some red grease before putting it in... Don't want to tear the seal...
