so i'm currently working on cleaning up my engine bay in my 1G and i'm curious as to what people have done to there upper motor mount... i have mine painted black right now but i was looking to go with something more shiny :sneaky:

also has anyone heard of someone building there own custom mount out of chromoly square tube? i was thinking it coulden't be to hard and it would look really nice in there... only problem would be how to put in the poly mount... any ideas?

attached a pic of what it looks like now :D:D

I would repaint it in satin black again, then strip the engine bay and paint that orange to match the body.

haha yea I would love to do that but i'm not really up for that big of a project anytime soon... had the motor out of my old talon a few to many times.

maybe sometime in the future though LOL

I can't tell, are you running power steering ? If not you can remove that large bracket on the front and cut the mount where it bolts to the car. cleans it up a lot.

Also run your throttle cable under your manifold, as well as all your vaccum lines, run you crankcase ventilation under your uicp, clean up the wires, zip tie them together so it looks cleaner, spray the bay with degreaser and get all the dirt and grime off, that would also clean it up a lot.

Here is my custom motor mount, but I did cut the front end off.

I run power steering and still got away with cutting the upper mount, along with the PS mounting bracket. I'm now running the Avid mounts pictured above - very nice looking.

Here is a easy one to make and looks good and is very light compared to stock

Nice... so from what I have seen from these pictures, you guys are not using the front brackets at all? that makes my job a whole lot easyer if you dont... are there any negitive affects to this?

thanks for the input so far... engine bays are looking awsome! :hellyeah:

I still use the front mounting holes on the block. I have heard of the #1 cylinder wall cracking on high HP cars with the mount cut. I will take a better pic when I get home.

Who's car are you talking about? Mine is cut right at the rear two bolts and never have a problem.

My mount is cut as Chris mentioned, retaining the P.S. and no issues.

I am not high HP as mentioned by 41062 so I cannot speak to that...

2Gs have no extra support on the mount and don't seem to have any block issues. I've never cut apart a 4g block, but wouldn't the water jacket be between the cylinder wall and the motor mount bracket?

I would be worried about the bolts snapping off with only the two holding the weight of the engine up. Don't the 2g cars have three bolts there?

Three offers better support where with only two, there's going to be more bending forces loaded sideways on the bolts.

I had a bone stock DD Focus come into the shop once with those bolts broken, and I was amazed they only used two bolts.

I'm on a big diagram kick today, so I drew one to explain what I believe to be the reason the mount bolts in the Focus broke off.
(Exhibit A) The design in question:

Gravity isn't the only force acting on any of the mounts. There in fore and aft rotation and in the case of AWD, there is also side to side rotation due to the driveshaft torque. These forces are equal to the engines torque output, multiplied by the gear ratio. Quite a bit of force I'd say.

Something to think about, more than anything I guess. Kind of explains why cars now have 4 motor mounts whereas old rear drive cars only have 2 plus a trans mount.
