Hey everyone,

First off, yes I searched and didn't find anything. Now on to the problem.

I rolling down the highway at about 75 and my foot is getting tired. So I twist the wiper control to turn the cruise control on and then press the button to activate it. Both the light on the cluster and light on the cruise control go on and I feel a short vibration through the gas pedal. But when I let off the gas, it decelerates as if the cruise isn't working (and clearly it isn't working). Anyone have any ideas or heard of this? Thanks

It could be your vacume pump is not working, or the vacume line to the pump, from the acuator is disconnected.

For a 1G N.A. => Acuator is located on drivers side fender, rear of the front wheel, kind of. Vacume line connects to actuator between the actuator and the fender, (curves around). It connects to the vacuum pump, on the bottom, drivers side, below the throttle cables. This unit is mounted in the center of the firewall, sometimes….at least for my 1G N.A. Turbo models are mounted on the passenger fender well. A FACTORY shop manual will show you all of this. Sounds like vacume problems. ;) :laser:
 
I didn't think the cruise was vacuum controlled on 1G's. My 1990 tsi and my 1992 GS parts car had the same cruise control box, which is in line with the throttle cable.
Also, on my truck, the cruise control is vacuum controlled and the system is nothing like my talon's. It's not connected to the throttle in anyway.
Although i could be wrong, I always thought that the cruise on a 1G is electronically controlled.

pre 91 cruise controls are electric. In 91 that switched to vacuum operated actuators. The vacuum pump is located below the cable assembly.
The actuator over by the drivers side strut tower on turbos too.

Like LaserDad suggests one of the common failures is for the hose to split and fall off.
The other common failure is for the rubber switch stops on your break and clutch pedals to wear out creating a hole in them that keeps the switches from closing.

Okay, I don't think I'm hijaking here, if I am sorry.

Mine just did almost the exact same thing. It hasn't worked since I've owned it and for shits and giggles on the way to Utah I twist the lever, press the button, and to my freakin' surpise, the green cruise light comes on (Never seen that before) and the speed actually sticks.

Normally, I turn the lever, the power light comes on, but then when I press the set button, it turns right off without even trying. It did this twice. Is this electrical, this vacuum thing, what?

What did yours turn out to be?

Is it working yet, what did you do?

sounds like the switch on the brake pedal--try using your left foot under the brake pedal to hold it all the way up & see if your cruise will set.
If this is the prob, find out why the brake pedal does not return all the way up on it's own--worn pads, low fluid or air in fluid or sticky pedal.
