I've done every test in the FSM and traced every wire and still stumped. The cruise control has worked three times since I've owned the car. When you turn the cruise control on the light on the stalk lights up but when you hit the set button nothing happens except for the little light will go out on the second or third time you hit set.

This is on a91 gsx manual trans car

I've tried every test and traced every wire listed in the factory service manual and the only code I get is Code 17 abnormal throttle position sensor but I've checked the voltage from the sensor all the way to the cruise control unit and it's within spec in the same for the idle position switch which are the only two things covered by Code 17 anyone got any ideas as to what might be the problem is the stalk may be bad or the cruise unit faulty

I doubt this is your issue but when I was having issues with mine it was the vaccum line coming off, replaced that and all has been well since.

New vacuum line, have also tested both the pump and the vacuum actuated control. The light on the dash never even comes on, also rotating the on/off stalk will not turn the small Orange light off. When i hit set several times in a row the cruise finally losses power until i turn it back on... the few times it had worked out worked great, just never consistently, just on rare occasion, and i drive at least an hour each way to town every day, and every few days i drive a 6 hour round trip to Columbus and back, so cruise is a vital accessory in my daily life

Well i went and added a fresh ground to the throttle body and that ended my code 17, so then i dismantled the stalk and believe that's where the problem lies, it does inconsistent things depending how you wiggle it and when testing the contacts with jumpers i was able to turn the cruise off repeatedly so i think your right, although the buttons passed the continuity tests in the FSM the small circuit and some of the other contacts seem to be too corroded to function properly

In a broke ass so not sure when I'll get a new stalk, but i do believe that's the problem...thing is probably costly being that is the headlight and wipers and cruise all in one assembly

On my '99 there is a switch on the clutch pedal that de-activates the cruise control. I don't know if a 1G has the same switch but I'd assume it does. Have you checked this switch? Wiggled the wires while checking continuity?

There's another on the brake pedal, but you'd probably know if this one was the problem because your brake lights would be on all the time. I only mention this because my little rubber thing fell off on my pedal which made it impossible for the pedal to activate the switch, leaving my brake lights on and making my cruise control inoperable.

Hope you get it figured out. I couldn't live without CC!

Replaced that switch, I've traced every wire, and with the code 17 solved by a better ground for the IPS I'm fairly certain it's the stalk at this point.. the on/off won't turn it off, but when itook it apart i could turn it off by jumping the contacts manually.

And the last time cruse worked out came on after i slammed my palm into the stalk a few times.. also if i pull up really hard on the stalk i can make the cruise torn of with the switch

And I'm the same way, cruise is a must, i drive my old explorer w which isn't near as fun simply because it had cruiser and an auto trans... can't wait to swap my dsm to auto..getting lazy in my old age LOL
