Critique My HX35 Setup

What is the ID of the inside of that fitting? 17mm?

The silver fitting ID is 5/8", or about 16mm. It should be over 17mm once I bore it out.

Quick confusion.

The black filter has a .030" restrictor. If I punch it out to 7/64", that will make it a .109" restrictor. That's .009 larger than the red filter, which is .100 according to FP. Something doesn't seem right...

Edit- got this figured out thanks to Justin. It seems FP made a little typo on their instruction sheet. The Red filter is .125, not .100 like their paper says.

So here's my progress of the day. Restrictor drilled out to 7/64(.109) inches. Time for a nap. LOL

Oil feed and drain setup is finally done! I went with a -4an banjo fitting and M12x1.5 banjo bolt. And even though I bought it off eBay for dirt cheap, it had no issues with fitment or sizing. I personally reamed out the sides holes and center, but just to be extra safe. Here's some pics, let me know what you think!

Just have to ask, that is for the feed if im not mistaken? I thought FP suggested that the filter be turned around the opposite way? "In the female, out the male".

I do like the idea though, after seeing the stuff the fp filter was catching on their website. Really does give food for thought.

Forced Performance said:
The filter can be run in either direction, but the preffered flow direction is in the female side and out the male side.

The only difference is the placement of the unit- if you have it at the filter housing instead of the turbo, it would be in/female, out/male. It doesn't really matter, though- one direction will catch contaminants inside the filter basket and one will catch them on the outside of the filter.

Figures I would miss that part :) Thanks for pointing it out Jus :thumb:

Yeah, like Justin said it'll catch the contaminants either way. I'll remove the entire filter/restrictor when it comes time to clean it anyways, so I'm not concerned about the filter neatly catching stuff.

Now that I've got the most important part (feed/drain) taken care of, and my budget grown some, I've updated my parts list. I've decided to keep the E85 and go Speed Density. Also planning to rev to around 8.5 RPM for obvious reasons. Please feel free to critique!

-Punishment MVS O2 housing
-BEP .55 Bolt-On housing (can't hold out for FP's new housing)
-BC Springs and Titanium Retainers
-DKS 272 cams (still seems like best bet without spending 500+ on cams)
-Adjustable cam gears (probably Fidanza so I can keep my 95/96 CAS)
-Walbro 400lph with rewire kit (upgraded return needed?)
-Filter-to-Rail kit with OEM filter
-Keeping my FIC 1150's (I'll keep en eye on IDC's, I promise ;))
-ECM Tuning SD bundle (Mitsu Style)
-Custom 4" intake with 7" K&N filter
-60mm NT throttle body
-1990 Straight-cut oil pump gears (can't find anywhere!)
-Mishimoto Rad hoses and New OEM Radiator (most likely Spyder GS for better upper hose location)
-Flex-a-Lite 14" 1,500 CFM pusher fan (if needed, relocating AC fan to pass side)

I'll be ordering everything this Tuesday so any input is appreciated.

You'll want the Walbro 450 for e85. Larger return not necessary but you want to do the "siphon" mod, otherwise you won't be able to bring base pressure low enough. Yes rewire is always good. For e85 also you should have a stainless fuel filter. The oem ones will disintegrate quickly. Other than that looking good! What's the deal with the straight cut gears? I thought those things were extremely loud?

Added the siphon mod to the to-do list! I might consider adapting an aftermarket filter to the stock lines... But I'm not really sold on the filter or 450lph pump. I'm just skeptical about "E85 safe" parts since I never had issues running a plain old 255 and parts store fuel filters.

The straight cut gears are noisy. However, I read a couple posts from some reputable members talking about helical gears generating heavy thrust load, especially with BSE and high RPM's. And what little I've read about helical trans gears supports their claim. I've got a leak in that area anyways so I figured why not add some extra reassurance while I have the case out?

Just out of curiosity, how far did you get the heater hose into the flange? Mine only threads in about 3 threads worth and then wont budge since its NPT. Does yours do the same?

I have straight cut gears. There's no noise difference.

That's good to know. Some people claim they're noisy, but I don't remember my '90 making anymore noise than my other DSM's. LOL

You mean the heater hose fitting? Mine threads all the way in, the fitting and drain flange are both 1/2 NPT. What do the threads look like on the drain flange? Maybe it was machined sloppy?

I chased mine with a tap and die but they are tapered for some reason. ITs all good though, I managed to find a 3/4npt flange last night so I ordered one of those to run a true -12an setup.

Just though I'd share the finished product! Everything went pretty smooth except for the compressor clearance. I had to dent the pipe and remove the turbo coolant banjo, which is no big deal. But I also had to grind down the block near the upper front bell housing bolt. Talk about tight fit....

Otherwise I had no issues during install. Unfortunately I'm just waiting for my valve springs and 400lph pump before I can actually start making some power.

Looking awesome man! I'm glad this thread got bumped, I picked up an 8 blade HX35 myself recently, this is exactly the info I needed!

Let me know if you need any help, I live right down the street (in Colorado terms). LOL

I went that route. 45 degree fitting on the turbo and another on the oil pan. The fittings were 1/8" away from each other.

Yeah same here, i used a 60* off thr pan 45* off the turbo.

I had plenty of clearance between the two, ended up using 7-8" of hose. Plenty of clearance from the front roll stop as well, but that might be based upon H1 vs HX more than AN vs Barb Fittings.

I might actually take you up on that when I get around to installing it. :hellyeah: It won't be soon, I'm a bit too busy with work for the next month or two.
